The holidays sure can put a dent in your wallet, but don’t let that ruin your Christmas break fun! There are lots of free and cheap things to do during winter break in Wichita that will keep the kids from getting bored!

When is winter break for Wichita schools?
Wichita Public Schools will be out for winter recess from December 20 through January 2, according to the district calendar online.

We’ve gathered up some great winter break activities to help you keep the kids busy and having fun!

Sedgwick County Zoo Discounts During Winter Break
The Sedgwick County Zoo offers $3 admission on Winter Wednesdays, so that’s a great day to go during winter break. But if you can’t go on a Wednesday, now you have even more options for discounted admission to the zoo! They’ve gotten all festive on us this year and decided to offer half-price admission to Sedgwick County Zoo from December 14 to December 31, 2018!
Wichita Art Museum Winter Break Fun
Winter Art Mania at the Wichita Art Museum is three days of FREE art exploration and activity for the family. Each day they’ll have new activities. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. December 26, 27, and 28, 2018.
Wichita Public Library Activities
The library will be closed Sunday, December 23 through Tuesday, December 25, but will reopen on Wednesday. Check out some great books and movies for your winter break. Kansas Aviation Museum’s Little Aviators Program
This free Friday morning activity at the Kansas Aviation Museum is usually reserved for kids 5 and younger, but during winter break they’ve extend the age-range up to 12 years. Admission is only $5 per child, and one parent gets in free. During Winter Break, Little Aviators will be held Friday, December 21 and Friday, December 28.
Winter Break Activities at Exploration Place
A budget-friendly option at Wichita’s favorite science museum is the Exploration Place Dome Theater $5 adult admission ages 12-64, $3 kids ages 3-11, Kids 2 & under are FREE, $4 seniors 65+.
You don’t need to pay for admission to Exploration Place to see a movie in the theater. Current movies include Chirpie’s Magical Sky, Pandas: The Journey Home, Great White Shark, Rock the Dome, Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd: The Wall, and Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here. Great Plains Nature Center Winter Break Kids Programs
The Great Plains Nature Center has activities for all ages throughout the week. For kids, there are story times, craft activities, and more – plus, admission is always free.
Kansas Humane Society Winter Break Critter Camps
The Kansas Humane Society will be offering its popular Critter Camps during winter again this year. Kids will play games, do crafts and activities, and learn about pet- and animal-related topics. They’ll even tour the vet clinic while they’re there.
The day-long camps are for children ages 5-12 and cost $35 per date. See the full schedule of winter break camps at the Humane Society website.
All Star Sports and All Star Adventures Winter Break Specials
All Star Wichita has daily specials during winter break with a different deal or bonus each day; some are better than others, and offers may vary depending on location. Be sure to check the specials/promos on their website before you decide which day you’ll go.
Carousel Skate Center Winter Break Schedule
Carousel will be open every day during winter break except for Christmas eve and Christmas day, so you’ll definitely be able to keep the kids busy and having fun. Carousel also has a great big new indoor play area (for a small additional charge) that the kids will probably love, especially when they need a break from skating.
Hours will vary depending on the day of the week, but generally Carousel Skate Center will be open from 1-4 p.m. on weekday afternoons, from 6-10 p.m. on both Fridays, from noon to 10 p.m. on both Saturdays, and from 1-6 p.m. on both Sundays. It doesn’t look like they have any discounts. Skating is $6 plus $2 skate rental if you need skates; “Skate and Play” (which includes the new play structure) is $10 plus $2 skate rental if you need them.
Wichita Riding Academy Holiday Horse Camp

Something extra special kids could do during winter break is participate in Wichita Riding Academy‘s Holiday Horse Camp, December 27 and 28, 2018. They’ll ride, do crafts, learn about the animals, and have a lot of fun.
It’s a little more than our other events at $75 per day, so if you’re looking for something lower, be sure to check out the deal on horseback riding lessons they’re advertising.
You can sign your child up for either one or both days of Holiday Horse Camp. Camp goes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum Winter Break Camps
The Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum has several FREE educational programs available in December including: Space Camp on December 20th and 28th where kids and their families will get to tour the Toys of the Future exhibit and enjoy a special space-age make & take project; the Victorian Cottage Tour and Christmas Card project on December 21; and the Playing in the Past event on December 27 in which kids will get a tour of the Child’s World exhibit followed by a vintage toy project and more! Wichita Ice Center Winter Break Skating
Skate with Santa and Friends at the Wichita Ice Center for $5 which includes skate rental. In addition, bring one donated food item per person. (Regular admission is $7 plus $3 skate rental.) All of the donated items will go to the Kansas Food Bank. Dates for this event are December 2, 9, 16 and 23. Skating will start at noon each day for this event but the end times vary.
