Taco Tuesday, first coined by a fast-food Mexican chain in the early 1980s, has certainly caught on in Wichita over the past 35 years. We’re guessing the alliteration was the first draw, and it certainly fits nicely on a menu.
But no matter how it started, it’s those tasty, crunchy tacos that are driving it to almost cult status every week.
Here are our favorite Taco Tuesday offers throughout Wichita. Do you know of any other Taco Tuesday deals we should add?
The usual disclaimer: Restaurant specials change frequently! Everything was correct when we first published this Taco Tuesday list but to be on the safe (and cheap) side, double-check the deal before you order.
Los Compadres Mexican Grill understands the heart of this celebration, which is why they make it simple: $1 for a street taco from 11 a..m – 9 p.m. Dine in or carry-out—neither option puts a limit on how many you can purchase.
Wichita on the Cheap subscriber Kathryn told us about Taco Rio’s Taco Tuesday deal. It’s only 75 cents for a meat or bean corn taco on Tuesdays! Plus, if you buy a dozen tacos you get one free. Deal-licious! They’re open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Taco Rio is at Seneca and Douglas.
Mulligan’s chose hump day to roll out its .99 chicken and .75 beef taco special. But Wednesdays seem to work for them —and you!
Country Kitchen Restaurants gets fancy with their two beer-battered cod tacos with lime slaw, chipotle creme, and a side of pinto beans for $8.99.
Reader Mike B. told us about this one. (Thanks, Mike!) Wichita favorite Margarita’s Cantina Taco Tuesday special is a 1/2 price a la carte taco from the menu (that’s $1.50 for those who don’t have a calculator handy) from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. They change the deal with the season here, but it’s still tacos and it’s always on Tuesday!
Oh, and reader Stacey says that A & J’s Music Room at Harry & Meridian does a great $1 fried taco too!
And a meal at Taco Pronto is practically a rite of passage for Wichita residents, but you haven’t lived until you’ve grabbed one of their fried corn Taco Tuesday deals. We’re talking just .70 per corn taco. (If you got the day wrong on your calendar, you can get a 12-pack for $9.99 every day.)
Champs Bar & Grill knows the value of their deal: the Big Ass tacos (with chips, no less) is $4.
Taco Y Salsas at 2128 N. Broadway offers .89 tacos on Tuesday: barbecue, carnitas, chicken, pork rinds, vegetables, chorizo, ham, fish, tinga … at this price you can buy them all.
Deano’s Grill & Tapworks puts a fun spin on its special. Not only do you get two steak, chicken, shrimp or fish tacos, they throw in shoestring onions as well for the $7 price. That makes it a meal more than a snack.
It’s also an elevated event at Hopping Gnome Brewery, where Chef Roberto pairs a taco entree with a craft beer. It is celebrated every second Tuesday each month from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
O’Malley’s Irish Pub can’t wait to get in the fun. They offer fried tacos for $1 until midnight every Tuesday and Thursday. Patrons praise their homemade salsa.
Emerson Biggin’s Bar and Grill also bucks the trend successfully with $$2 fried tacos on Saturdays.
On the Border has jumped into the craze with prices starting at $2 for ground beef, chicken tinga or vegetable tacos, hard or soft. Specialty Southwest chicken is $3, and the new brisket taco with jalapeño BBQ sauce and fried onion strings is $4. They don’t call it Taco Fix Tuesday for nothing.
Likewise, La Hacienda offers combo meals on Tuesdays: 2 for $6.50 or 3 for $8.50 with rice and beans. Or you could opt for a regular ground beef or shredded chicken taco for $1 and skip the trimmings.
Chicken and Pickle’s Taco Tuesday offering is a beaut. Carne asada or shrimp tacos for just $2 each, all day.
Cholita’s street tacos are a delicious $1.59 each today.
The Anchor jumps on the bandwagon with $2 tacos and several drink specials.
And then there are the folks who aren’t fond of tacos. You are not alone in Wichita … and Taco Shop sees you. That’s why their Taco Tuesday special is actually for enchiladas: buy one enchilada dinner, get the second for just $1. (But they also have a Taco Thursday deal: get an original, a flour, and a super taco all for $3!)
Let’s Not Taco About It
These taco deals have moved on to that great menu in the sky, but we’ll always remember them fondly.
When you can’t make up your mind, Tacos Lopez puts two taco versions on the menu, just to make it harder. Here, regular tacos are only $1.75, while street tacos are just $1. At those prices, you can afford to mix and match. Not to be outdone, Rene’s has jumped into the craze with $1 tacos , and with its late-night hours, you don’t have to change your schedule to eat well. It’s hard to beat the authentic taste of a taco at Las Mananitas Restorante on N. Arkansas Ave., but their $1 tacos have a catch: They bucked the trend to offer Taco Tuesday prices on Wednesday instead. Saddle up and ride to El Vaquero on East Central. Tacos $1 solo Martes (and Wednesdays and Thursdays)! Choose from tacos filled with grilled angus steak strips, pastor (spiced pork), chorizo, chicken, or carnitas (pulled pork). The Bullpen by Club Rodeo isn’t about to be left out of the fun. Come hungry for $1 Bullpen beef tacos and $2 deep fried beef tacos. (Check out their drink specials that go with these fine, crunchy delicacies, too.) When it comes to budgets, MoJoes gets you. That’s why you can drop in on Tuesday and get .75 fried or soft tacos! They even include sour cream and salsa at that price. Sports bars are the place to head on the second workday of the week, it seems, as Magoos Bar & Grill serves $1 tacos right up to the stroke of midnight.
