Wildflower Walks at Great Plains Nature Center: Free

Sharing is caring!

Looking for a fun and free way to enjoy the outdoors in Wichita? Every last Thursday of the month at 6 PM, the community is invited to join a Wildflower Walk at Chisholm Creek Park, part of the scenic grounds at Great Plains Nature Center.

This monthly walk is a guided exploration of one of Wichita’s most beautiful natural spaces. Participants will stroll through native prairie and woodland trails while learning about the wildflowers currently in bloom, as well as notable native plants and trees. It’s an easygoing event that’s perfect for all ages, whether you’re a plant enthusiast, a nature lover, or just someone who enjoys a peaceful evening outside.

Led by naturalists and staff from the Great Plains Nature Center, these walks provide an opportunity to ask questions, deepen your understanding of Kansas ecosystems, and develop a new appreciation for the local landscape. The route changes slightly each month depending on what’s blooming and where the action is in the park, so there’s always something new to see.

Details:

  • When: Last Thursday of each month
  • Time: Meet at 6 PM, walk departs at 6:05 PM
  • Where: Chisholm Creek Park (meet near the large rock in the Great Plains Nature Center parking lot)
  • Cost: Free
  • Registration: Not required
  • Note: Weather dependent

Participants are encouraged to bring water, dress appropriately for the outdoors, and carry a journal if they’d like to take notes.

Chisholm Creek Park is one of Wichita’s most beautiful natural areas, and these walks offer a relaxing way to learn more about the local environment while spending time outside.

  1. Hi, the narrative says the walks are held on the 4th Saturdays. The calendar shows the 4th Fridays. Probably the 4th Fridays? Thanks

    1. Oh – I’m sorry. I better double-check and then I’ll make sure it’s correct in both places! Thanks for asking… sometimes my brain doesn’t keep up with my typing fingers!

    2. Looks like it really is 4th Saturdays. I double-checked it on the GPNC Facebook event (link in the post above). Sorry about the mixup – and again, thanks for saying something so we can correct it!
