On July 21, 1870, Wichita was officially incorporated. What started as a small trading post along the Arkansas River has grown into the largest city in Kansas and a community known for its aviation, western heritage, local businesses, and friendly Midwestern spirit.

About Wichita
- Before becoming a city, the area served as an important gathering place and trading center for Native peoples for thousands of years. The first permanent settlement of Wichita Indians was recorded in 1863.
- J.R. Mead opened a trading post in 1864, helping establish the community that would become Wichita.
- Wichita quickly became famous as a Cowtown, with thousands of Texas cattle driven up the Chisholm Trail before being shipped east by rail.
- The Santa Fe Railway arrived in 1872, fueling rapid growth and helping transform Wichita into a major business center.
- During the early 1900s, aviation pioneers including Clyde Cessna, Walter Beech, and Bill Lear helped earn Wichita its nickname: The Air Capital of the World.
- Today, Wichita is home to nearly 400,000 residents and remains the largest city in Kansas.

Did You Know?
One of the 124 people who signed Wichita’s incorporation petition was Catherine McCarty, the only woman to do so. She later became known as the mother of the infamous outlaw Billy the Kid.
