Halloween is almost here, and if you’re wondering how to save money on Halloween candy this year, you’re not alone! Between costumes, decorations, pumpkin patches, Fall events, and buying enough candy for trick-or-treaters, Halloween expenses can add up quickly.
I recently did a TV interview with KWCH Channel 12, and one of the questions was about ways to save money on Halloween. I had plenty of tips to share, but afterward, I realized I didn’t have a dedicated article about it on Wichita on the Cheap! So, of course, I had to change that.
I also have a friend who lives in College Hill, which has some of the best Halloween displays, one of Wichita’s most popular trick-or-treating neighborhoods, and she asked me for money-saving tips because they get thousands of trick-or-treaters! Can you imagine how much candy that takes? Even saving a few cents per piece could make a huge difference.
I love Halloween, especially seeing all the kids dressed up and having fun around Wichita. But whether you’re handing out candy to 20 kids or 2,000, there are plenty of ways to find cheap Halloween candy, bulk candy deals, and affordable trick-or-treat alternatives without losing the fun.
Whether you’re shopping at Walmart, Target, Aldi, Costco, Sam’s Club, or your favorite Wichita grocery store, here are some of my favorite tips and tricks for stretching your Halloween candy budget! PS. I personally usually get my candy at Ollie’s Woodlawn.

15 Ways to Save Money on Halloween Candy
1. Compare the Price Per Piece, Not Just the Bag Price
This is one of my biggest Halloween candy shopping tips!
A $15 bag might look expensive, but if it contains 200 pieces, it could actually be a better deal than a $10 bag with only 80 pieces.
Look at the total number of individually wrapped pieces and calculate what you’re paying for each one.
2. Don’t Assume Bulk Candy Is Always Cheaper
Buying Halloween candy in bulk can save money, but not always.
Warehouse stores like Costco and Sam’s Club are worth checking, especially if you expect lots of trick-or-treaters. But compare their prices with grocery store sales and promotions before buying.
3. Look for Candy Sales and Digital Coupons
Check the weekly ads and apps for Wichita-area grocery stores and major retailers.
Watch for:
- Digital coupons and store rewards
- Buy-one-get-one promotions
- Discounts when purchasing multiple bags
- Target Circle and other retailer offers
- Clearance and seasonal promotions
Don’t forget to check the final price after coupons, not just the advertised sale price.
4. Buy Candy Closer to Halloween
Retailers sometimes offer promotions as Halloween approaches to move seasonal inventory.
If you’re flexible about brands, waiting for a sale can pay off. Just don’t wait until the last minute if you need a specific candy or expect a lot of trick-or-treaters.
5. Split Bulk Candy With a Friend or Neighbor
This is one of my favorite ways to save!
If a warehouse store has a great price on a huge bag, split it with another family. You’ll both get the lower bulk price without buying more candy than you need.
6. Set a Candy Budget Before Shopping
Decide how much you want to spend before heading to the store.
If you have $30 to spend, compare how many individually wrapped treats you can get for that amount instead of choosing bags based on the packaging.
7. Buy a Mix of Candy Instead of All Name Brands
Popular chocolate bars can cost more per piece than other individually wrapped treats.
Mixing chocolate with less expensive candy options may help stretch your budget while still giving trick-or-treaters some variety.
8. Don’t Open All the Bags at Once
Keep some bags unopened until you actually need them.
If fewer trick-or-treaters show up than expected, you may be able to return unopened candy, depending on the store’s return policy.
9. Shop Dollar Stores, But Compare Sizes
Dollar stores can be a good place to find small candy bags, seasonal treats, and non-candy goodies.
However, smaller packages aren’t always a better value. Check the price per piece before stocking up.
10. Check Your Grocery Store Rewards
If you already earn grocery rewards, points, or cash back, Halloween candy purchases may qualify.
Just make sure you’re not spending extra simply to earn a reward.
11. Combine Candy Shopping With Other Deals
If a retailer offers a discount on a qualifying grocery purchase, Halloween candy may help you reach the minimum.
Only do this when you’re buying items you already need. Spending $20 extra to save $5 isn’t much of a deal!
12. Consider Smaller Individually Wrapped Treats
Fun-size candy and smaller treats can be a more affordable way to hand something out to a large crowd.
Check the package count and remember that one treat per trick-or-treater is perfectly fine.
13. Team Up With Neighbors
If your neighborhood gets lots of Halloween visitors, consider splitting the cost of candy with neighbors and handing it out from one spot.
This can also turn into a fun little neighborhood gathering.
14. Save Leftover Candy for Other Occasions
If you end up with extra candy, don’t let it go to waste.
Use individually wrapped leftovers for holiday gatherings, party favors, lunchbox treats, or baking, as appropriate for the candy’s expiration date.
15. Shop the After-Halloween Clearance Sales
November 1 can be a great time to find discounted Halloween candy!
Look for markdowns at stores like Walmart, Target, Walgreens, and local grocery stores.
If the candy is still within its best-by date, you can use it for upcoming gatherings or other treats. Just remember that clearance prices and inventory vary.
Halloween Candy Statistics for this Year
Halloween candy is big business, and Americans are expected to spend billions on treats this year!
According to the National Retail Federation’s 2026 Halloween survey:
- $4.1 billion: Expected nationwide spending on Halloween candy.
- 96%: Percentage of Halloween shoppers planning to buy candy.
- $13.5 billion: Total expected Halloween spending, including candy, costumes, decorations, and other purchases.
- $115.14: Average expected spending per person on Halloween.
- 61%: Percentage of consumers planning to hand out Halloween candy.
- 49%: Percentage of shoppers who started Halloween shopping in September or earlier.
With candy being such a popular Halloween purchase, even saving a few cents per piece can make a big difference, especially if your neighborhood gets hundreds of trick-or-treaters!
Creative and Cheap Alternatives to Halloween Candy
You don’t have to hand out expensive chocolate bars to make Halloween fun!
Here are some budget-friendly ideas:
- Glow bracelets: Fun for kids and useful for visibility on Halloween night.
- Halloween stickers: Buy in bulk and cut sticker sheets into smaller portions.
- Temporary tattoos: Look for Halloween-themed packs.
- Mini coloring pages: Print small Halloween designs at home.
- Pencils and erasers: Check back-to-school clearance sections.
- Mini bubbles: Fun for younger trick-or-treaters.
- Playful mystery bowls: Let kids pick a treat from a covered bowl without seeing which one they’ll get.
- Treat bags: Combine one piece of candy with an inexpensive sticker or small toy.
If you’re handing out non-food treats, consider keeping them separate from candy. Small items should be age-appropriate and free of choking hazards for younger children.
Make Halloween Candy More Fun Without Spending More
Sometimes it’s not about what you’re handing out but how you’re handing it out.
Here are a few ideas that can make your house memorable without adding much to the budget.
- The mystery candy bowl: Let kids reach into a decorated container to choose a wrapped treat.
- Candy voting: Have two bowls labeled with fun Halloween choices and let kids vote by picking their treat.
- Halloween trivia: Ask a simple Halloween question before handing out candy, but make sure every child gets a treat whether they answer correctly or not.
- Decorated candy station: Use a pumpkin bucket, string lights, or decorations you already own.
- Neighborhood candy swap: Coordinate with friends so each house offers something different.
The best part? Most of these ideas use supplies you probably already have at home.
How Much Halloween Candy Should You Buy?
This really depends on your neighborhood.
If you’re new to the area, ask neighbors how many trick-or-treaters they typically get. Some Wichita neighborhoods have just a handful of visitors, while others can get a steady stream of kids throughout the evening.

These are example calculations, not current store prices. If you plan to give two pieces per child, double the candy quantities and estimated cost.
My Favorite Halloween Candy Money-Saving Trick
If I had to choose just one tip, it would be this: Don’t shop by the size of the bag. Shop by the number of pieces you’re getting for your money.
And remember, you don’t have to hand out the biggest candy bars on the block to make Halloween special. A friendly smile, a little creativity, and a fun Halloween atmosphere can make trick-or-treating memorable.
Halloween is supposed to be fun, not stressful on your wallet. I hope these tips help your family enjoy the holiday and save a little money along the way!
