Can you think of anything better to do when the weather is so warm than getting together with friends and neighbors for an old-fashioned ice cream social? Our grandparents really knew what they were doing when they invented this kind of gathering!
And this summer, it comes with a birthday cake too!
Visit the museum that celebrates our own local history and celebrates our local birthdays (two of them).
On Sunday, July 20, from 1 to 5 p.m., the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum is hosting a free community celebration in honor of the 155th birthdays of both Wichita and Sedgwick County!
You’re invited to join the fun in Heritage Square, right in the heart of downtown Wichita.
Heritage Square is a beautiful plaza area with seating and a gazebo in the center, and it’s just behind the museum, accessible from either Main St. or William.
The event includes ice cream, cake, music, family-friendly activities, and access to the museum’s exhibits, all inside the beautifully preserved 1890 City Hall building. They have four floors of interesting museum exhibits to explore.
It’s a laid-back way to spend an afternoon, soak up a little history, and celebrate what makes Wichita such a unique and welcoming place.
Admission is free for museum members and their guests. Not a member? No problem — just bring a birthday card (homemade or store-bought) for free entry. You can even pick one up at the Museum Store.
The ice cream social will be held at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum on Main Street downtown. It’s the cool building with the clock tower.
And if you needed another excuse for a scoop of ice cream, National Ice Cream Day falls the same weekend — so it’s a triple celebration!

Cost: FREE for members; everyone else can get in free if they bring a birthday card.

A typo in the write up re IC Social at Historical Museum. Every other listing of the event, shows it as Sun only – not Sat & Sun.
