You know you’re not supposed to just throw confidential information into the trash, but sometimes the shred pile gets pretty high if you don’t have a paper-chewing monster of a shredder like mine. (We’ve had it for years and yep – it’s every bit as good as they say it is.)

Protect your private information and avoid identity theft by taking advantage of these events throughout the year. This list includes document shredding events that are open to the public, but some banks and credit unions offer shred days for their own customers.

Hutchinson free shred event, March 1, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Part of the Kansas Attorney General Consumer Protection Week. Bring up to 3 boxes or bags of personal shred to the Kansas State Fairgrounds, Gate 3, W. 23rd Ave. and N. Main St. More info.
El Dorado free shred event, March 4, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Part of the Kansas Attorney General Consumer Protection Week. Bring up to 3 boxes or bags of personal shred to the YMCA in El Dorado, 300 N. Main St. More info
Newton free shred day, April 17, 2021, from 9-11 a.m. Free community shred event hosted by Midland National Bank. Bring up to 5 boxes or bags of personal shred material to 527 N. Main Street. Remain in your vehicle and follow traffic lanes. More info.
United Way of the Plains Free Shred Event April 24, 2021 from 10 a.m. to noon at 245 N. Water Street in Wichita, KS. Bring a maximum of 5 boxes or bags; volunteers will unload from your car so you don’t have to leave your vehicle. Sponsored by Wichita Shredding. Info here
Capitol Federal Free Shred Day has a free shred day in Wichita scheduled for April 24, 2021 from 10 a.m. to noon at Bradley Fair. Remain in your car; employees will unload a maximum of two paper/plastic grocery bags or two copy-paper-sized boxes of paper from the trunk or cargo area of your vehicle.
Capitol Federal also has free community shred events happening at locations around the state this spring. You can find them all at the CapFed website here. Be sure to note the amount and type of documents that will be accepted for shredding.
Bel Aire free shred day (residents only), May 1 from 9 a.m. to noon. Hosted by the City of Bel Aire for Bel Aire residents only at the city building. Bring up to 5 boxes or bags of personal material; follow traffic lanes and remain in your vehicle. More info.
Cambridge Market/Wichita Federal Credit Union free community shred event, May 15, 2021 from 9-11 a.m. Bring up to 5 boxes or bags of personal material for free shredding. Stay in your car and follow the lanes of traffic. Workers will remove the paper from your car and it will be shred onsite. Then go shopping at the stores in Cambridge Market! More info.
Kansas Attorney General Free Shred Events Shred events are scheduled around the state during National Consumer Protection Week in early March. To find shred events near you, keep an eye on this page.
Underground Vaults and Storage has scheduled free shred days at banks across Kansas, including Wichita, Hutchinson, Newton, McPherson, and more. Some events are for members, residents, or customers only. Here is a good place to see what they have planned.
Shred Events Not Yet Updated for 2021
Keep an eye out for free shred days or low-cost shredding services from these in the list below. They all had shred events in previous years, but so far I haven’t heard any news about 2021.
AAA Cover Your Assets had shred events at 5 locations (Lawrence, Topeka, Manhattan, E. Wichita and W. Wichita) one year. No update yet for this year. Free shredding drop-off, travel tips, home maintenance tips, vehicle maintenance checklist, and more.
INTRUST Bank Free Shred Days INTRUST had five Wichita-area free shred events in previous years, beginning in May. All of the shredding events were on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring your documents and dump them into the bins. INTRUST had scheduled free shredding days at locations near Kansas City and in Oklahoma as well. No word yet on free shred dates for 2021.
The File Depot occasionally has had free shred days in the past. You could bring up to 5 banker boxes for free shredding; each additional box was only $5 each. The Wichita office moved and is now located at 1930 N. Ohio in Wichita.
Wichita Federal Credit Union usually hosts one or two free shredding days for the community. The Wichita East shred event is listed above; the west event (if there is one) is unknown (to me). In the past they’ve posted these shred events on the WFCU Facebook page here.
AARP Free Shred Event was in May last year. It was free and open to the public but you did have to register in advance. In addition to shredding, they collected donations of non-perishable food items to give to the Kansas Food Bank. To find future free shred events, keep an eye on the AARP Wichita Events listing here.
BBB Free Shred Days The Better Business Bureau had free shredding events across the country in 2019, but so far I don’t see one for Wichita in 2021. However, they say to keep checking this list because new locations might be added.
