Botanica The Wichita Gardens

Botanica is one of our favorite attractions in Wichita. It’s open year-round, and repeat visits offer new surprises as the gardens change with the seasons. The 20 acres of ever-changing botanical wonderland house more than 30 themed areas and over 4,000 plant species — including more than 50,000 tulip bulbs that bloom in spring, followed by seasonal flowers and plants that carry color and interest through every season. As you wind through the gardens, you’ll discover inspiring sculptures, relaxing water features, and a restored 1949 carousel that has become a beloved Wichita fixture.

It really is spectacularly beautiful. And it’s one of those places that’s fun for the whole family.

A full walk-through is about a mile and takes 60 to 90 minutes at a leisurely pace. There are plenty of benches throughout.

The Downing Children’s Garden is a destination within a destination — working water pump, giant treehouse, chalk drawing areas, musical maze, and more features designed to get kids engaged with nature.

The Butterfly House lets you see up to 50 species of native and exotic butterflies, including watching them emerge from chrysalides and take their first flights.

Be transported into the Chinese Garden of Friendship — a tribute to Wichita’s sister city of Kaifeng, China, showcasing traditional Chinese gardening in a majestic display of art and architecture. It’s one of those corners of the gardens that always surprises people who haven’t found it yet.

These are just a few of the many gardens.

The gardens also feature over 50 sculptures, flowing streams, fountains, and a waterfall.

A Botanica membership easily pays for itself within your first or second visit and includes discounts on many of the special events and programs held throughout the year. Botanica is also part of the American Horticulture Society reciprocal program, so your membership can get you discounted or free admission at over 300 botanical gardens throughout the country — great for travelers.

Sunflower Summer — Botanica is one of our favorites, and we’re always excited when they participate in the Kansas Tourism Sunflower Summer program. Kansas students and their families can visit for free during the summer. This is one of the best-kept secrets in Wichita.

Bank of America Museums on Us — Bank of America cardholders may get free admission on certain weekends.

Moms on Mother’s Day / Dads on Father’s Day — A longstanding tradition at Botanica is to offer mothers free admission on Mother’s Day and fathers free admission on Father’s Day, each with a paid admission. If we learn that it is coming back this year, you can be sure we’ll let our readers know.

For years, one of the neat perks at Botanica was that you could bring your own food and beverages into the gardens — a great option if you wanted to pack a picnic. Be sure to check botanica.org to see if that’s still the case before you pack anything. If not, the Garden Café is on-site for light snacks and drinks.

Prices and dates change every year — always verify at botanica.org.

Tulip Festival (Spring) — Make plans to attend Botanica’s Tulip Festival. This is a Wichita spring tradition for all ages — the perfect event to get families and friends outside to enjoy beautiful spring blooms. It really is spectacularly beautiful. Pro Tip: Contact Botanica about golf cart tulip tours — it’s an excellent option for seeing the blooms. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Twilight Tunes on the Terrace (Summer) — An evening concert series in the gardens. A wonderful reason to visit after work.

BOOtanica (Fall) — When fall arrives in Wichita, it’s not just about cooler weather and pumpkin spice — it’s also the season for BOOtanica. This family-friendly Halloween festival transforms the gardens with spooky charm, creative activities, and fall fun. Requires a separate ticket.

Botanica Illuminations (November/December) — Botanica’s Illuminations is an annual tradition in Wichita, which fills the night sky with holiday lights — up to two million of them — and Christmas music. In addition to the amazing displays and carousel rides, Illuminations features live carolers each night, hot cocoa and treats, and the opportunity to visit Santa. Recently voted one of the Top 10 Best Light Shows in the country. Requires a separate ticket purchased in advance — not included with general admission.
