The Wichita YMCA will once again offer a series of adult cooking classes for parents and caregivers.

These hands-on classes, called Cooking Matters, are focused on helping parents, pregnant women, or caregivers of kids learn how to make healthy, nutritious meals on a budget. It’s especially helpful for parents or caregivers from lower-income households because you’ll learn how to stretch that grocery budget!

The six-week series of classes are free, and are being held virtually. There are still upcoming classes open to new registrations.

You do not have to be a YMCA member to take the free cooking classes. (However, you do have register. See below for registration information.)

Weekly topics include:

  • Free $20 grocery store gift card when you participate in 3 classes
  • Meal planning and budgeting
  • A virtual grocery store tour for affordable, healthy foods
  • Getting your kids in the kitchen

Space is limited for this free program. For more information and to register, call Tammi Krier, Healthy Eating Director for the YMCA, at (316) 776-8176 or email tammi.krier@ymcawichita.org

  1. How old do children need to be to participate in the cooking classes? Thank you!

    1. Well, these classes are actually for parents and caregivers, so I’m not sure they’re open to children. But if you have a teen who babysits, that might qualify as a “caregiver” – I’m just not sure. If you still have a question, you can call Tammi at the phone number in the article.

    2. Hey there, to follow up with your question about kids, we typically do not have children in the class. We actually have a program called the Jr. Chef Academy that is a kids cooking class program for kids aged 6-12: https://ymcawichita.org/jrchefs
