The Wichita-Derby Barn and Contra Dance club hosts regular contra dancing events, with lessons for beginners who arrive early.
This is a family-friendly dance for everyone from age 8 to 88, and you don’t need to bring a partner. They have live music and callers, and you get a serious workout!
Contra dancing is easier to pick up with a quick lesson than square dancing, so beginners are more than welcome. Lessons for beginners usually begin at 6:30 p.m. and the dances start at 7 p.m.
Kids 16 and younger can dance FREE, and it’s also free for spectators if you just want to go and see what it’s all about. The cost for participants is only $7 for adults, $5 for students over the age of 16 and $5 for seniors.
Most dances are held in the Oaklawn Activity Center cafeteria at 4904 S. Clifton, which is south of the Kwik Shop on 47th Street South, just west of K-15.
Be sure to wear comfortable, casual clothing and go prepared to have a good time.
