  • Visit a local Lake/Park

        • Located just 10 min from Wichita you can find activities like fishing, swimming, camping, picnicking, biking and hiking

      • OJ Watson Park
        • Popular lakefront park offers fishing, boating, 3 playgrounds. Extra cost includes: mini golf, kids’ rides & concessions

      • Sedgwick County Park
        • Center for outdoor sports, recreation & fitness, with fishing on 4 lakes, plus shelter rentals.

      • Lake Afton Park: offers
        • 720 acres of recreational fun for the entire family. The 258 acre lake provides boating, water skiing, fishing, and swimming opportunities. Camping facilities include both RV and tent sites with all the expected amenities and more.

  • Go to Chicken N Pickle 
    • WOTC Recommendation: There is a big courtyard full of FREE games. You can checkout bags for cornhole at the hostess stand inside.   • Visit the Keeper of the Plains
    • WOTC Recommendation: Go see the fire turned on infront of the sculpture nightly: 9 PM for 15 minutes. During standard time (fall and winter): 7 PM for 15 minutes. The Keeper of the Plains is a 44-foot tall steel sculpture standing at the point where the Big and Little Arkansas rivers join together in downtown Wichita.
  • Visit Kansas Wildlife Exhibit 
    • WOTC Recommendation: It’s officially named the “Kansas Wildlife Exhibit” but fondly known by Wichitans as the Riverside Park Zoo. This zoo is completely FREE to visit. Did you know they do feeding at noon everyday? Yes, you can go see FREE animal feeding everyday. Find our more information HERE
  • Do a random act of kindness
    • WOTC Recommendation:
      • Give a unexpected compliment
      • Let someone cut in front of you in line
      • Go pick wild flowers and give to your loved one
      • Pick up a piece of litter and throw it away
      • Smile at someone that looks sad
      • Learn some new jokes to share with others

Free Things to do in Wichita

  • Take the Q Line down Douglas
    • WOTC Recommendation: Wichita Transit’s free downtown Q-Line bus service has a whole new look. The Q-line in Wichita has been and still will be a great FREE way to get around downtown – it just won’t keep the nostalgic trolley look. Find our more HERE
  • Camp in the living room/backyard
    • WOTC Recommendation:
      • Hang some sheets from the furniture to make a forts to sleep in
      • Get everyone’s bed mattresses and sleep on those in one room
      • Throw a blanket over the kitchen table for a tent
    • For more entertainment
      • Play this fun question game 
      • Read a book, turn off the lights and play tag with flash lights, make a fire outside or in the fireplace or lay board games
  • Watch a movie

  • Go hiking
    • WOTC Recommendation: Go to Great Plains Nature Center. Its completely free to visit the indoor museum where you can see a 2,200 gallon aquarium or go wonder the trails.
    • Explore one of our favorite places to walk in Wichita
    • Or get wheels rolling and try out one of Wichita’s many biking trails
  • Go to the library and checkout a book
    • WOTC Recommendation: Public Libraries are a great resource for families. The children’s reading area at the library usually  has puzzles and lots of books to read.  In addition, there are many free activities and story times throughout the year. Libraries are also a great place to check out books and rent free movies. Below, is a list of some of our local libraries in Wichita and the surrounding area.   • Go see all the local murals
    • WOTC Recommendation: Did you know there are over 100 murals to visit all over Wichita? Another fun fact is that Wichita has the largest mural in the world painted by a single artist near 21st & Broadway.  If you have an iPhone or other Apple device, you can download a handy free app that not only gives you image previews of the Avenue Art Days murals, but also driving directions to each one.   • Make a time capsule
    • WOTC Recommendation: Creating your own time capsule doesn’t have to be difficult, time-consuming, or expensive. Use your time capsule to document history, personal accomplishments and small details of memories.
      • Your favorite fashion trends from a magazine
      • A newspaper published on their birthday or a big
      • School papers/art projects
      • Photos from the past year/years
      • Really anything can go in a time capsule
  • Go on an art walk through Wichita State University
    • WOTC Recommendation: Did you know that WSU has 81 works across its 330 acre campus. The Ulrich Museum of Art has partnered with the Smartify app to give you information about the Martin H.
