Gown Town 2020: free prom dresses and suits for high school students

Do you know someone who needs a suit or dress for prom, but can’t afford it? Or do you have nice formal wear you no longer need that you’d like to donate?

Kansas high school students with valid school ID will have an opportunity to shop for prom free at the GownTown event in Wichita again this year.

Gently used formal wear and accessories will be available at no cost to high school students who would otherwise skip prom.

Clothing offered at Gown Town will include prom dresses, men’s suits, sport coats, tuxedos, and shoes.

The American Sewing Guild will have volunteers at Gown Town to make alterations if needed.

Donations of formal wear are also accepted and appreciated. If you’d like to donate any gowns, shoes, or men’s formal wear that are in good condition, drop them off at any In the Bag Cleaners location.

In the Bag is also donating its services in cleaning all the Gown Town donations.

The Gown Town event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, February 29, 2020 at North High School in the gym. North High is near 13th and Waco at 1437 N. Rochester St. in Wichita.

For full details, visit the FM 96.3 website here or the Facebook event page here and see the Gown Town flyer below.

  1. Who is the organizers that I would contact? My granddaughter is a senior at North high and we didn’t know of the March 2nd date at North to pick out a gown. Is it too late to do so?

    1. I believe it may be too late, but you might check with her school and/or In the Bag. I know both are involved in hosting this event.

  2. Do You let kids who are online schooled pick dresses out? we go through K 12 Olathe Kansas. We live in Ellsworth co

    1. I’m not sure. They say they require a Kansas high school ID. That’s the only requirement I know of, but you might want to double-check with one of the event organizers.

    1. Hi Angi. That’s a good question, but I don’t know the answer. You might want to contact In The Bag, since they are the ones who are collecting formalwear donations.

  3. Is it just for high school or could a middle school student attend for a formal dress?

    1. Oh boy. What a great question – and I do not know the answer! I suggest visiting the Facebook page (link is in the post) and asking there. If you still can’t find out, then maybe there is a phone number given that you can call. If all else fails, show up!

  4. Please clarify. It is Friday, March 14, 2-8 pm, or Saturday? Article references both.

    Thank you!
