I love TJ Maxx. It’s honestly one of my favorite stores, and my girls and I go all the time. It’s our go-to for back-to-school shopping, Christmas gifts, birthday presents, home décor, and honestly… just about anything. We never know what we’ll find, and that’s half the fun. Every trip feels like a treasure hunt, and we’ve discovered some of our favorite clothes, toys, books, and home accessories there over the years.
One of the things I love most is that I can often find name-brand items for a fraction of what I’d pay at a department store. Whether I’m shopping for a teacher gift, a birthday present, a new outfit for one of the girls, or something special for our home, I almost always check TJ Maxx first. It’s one of those stores where I rarely leave empty-handed and usually spend less than I expected.

If you’re new to shopping at TJ Maxx, it helps to know that it’s a little different from most retailers. They don’t offer weekly coupons or big holiday sales like many department stores. Instead, they buy overstock, closeouts, and special purchases from thousands of brands, allowing them to sell merchandise at prices that are typically 20% to 60% below department store prices. That means the inventory is constantly changing, so every shopping trip is a little different.
When Is the Best Time to Shop at TJ Maxx
If you’re hoping to find the best selection, shop on weekday mornings, especially Tuesday through Thursday. Most stores receive new shipments several times each week, and employees stock new merchandise throughout the day. Shopping early gives you a better chance of finding the newest arrivals before other shoppers do.
Weekends are usually the busiest, and by then many of the most popular items have already been picked over.
When Does TJ Maxx Restock?
Unlike many stores, TJ Maxx doesn’t have one official restock day. Most locations receive deliveries three to five times each week, and new merchandise is placed on the sales floor as it’s processed. That’s why frequent shoppers often stop by every week or even a couple of times a week because you never know what might show up.
Understanding the Clearance Tags
One of the easiest ways to save even more is by learning the tag colors.
- White tags are the regular TJ Maxx price.
- Red tags mean an item has been marked down.
- Yellow tags are the final markdown and are usually the lowest price you’ll find.
- Purple tags identify higher-end designer merchandise in The Runway department.
Pro Tip: Red tags come first. Items are initially marked down with a red clearance tag. If they don’t sell, they may eventually receive a yellow tag, which indicates the final markdown—the lowest price the item will reach before it’s removed from the store. Not every red-tag item makes it to yellow, so if it’s something you really want, you have to decide whether it’s worth waiting and risking someone else buying it.
If you spot something you love with a yellow tag, don’t wait too long. Final markdown items tend to sell quickly, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.
When Are the Biggest Sales?
TJ Maxx doesn’t have traditional sales very often, but shoppers look forward to two major clearance events each year. The Yellow Tag Sale in January and late July.

Yellow Tag Sale in January & Summer Clearance
TJ Maxx holds 2 of its biggest clearance events of the year: the Yellow Tag Sale. This is when winter merchandise and other clearance items receive their final markdowns, making it one of the best times to score incredible bargains. You’ll often find clothing, shoes, home décor, holiday items, and gifts marked down 50–75% off their already discounted TJ Maxx prices.

Spot the Sales at TJ Maxx
During these sales, you’ll often find yellow-tag markdowns on seasonal merchandise with some of the deepest discounts of the year. Some stores put up balloons to help you find the deals. I know the one on East Kellogg does.

There are certain departments I never skip because that’s where I’ve found some of my best bargains.

- Beauty products
- Handbags
- Shoes
- Workout clothes

I also love shopping there for teacher gifts because they have so many unique items at affordable prices.
Tips for Shopping TJ Maxx Like a Pro

Is TJ Maxx Worth It?
Absolutely! If you enjoy bargain hunting, TJ Maxx is one of the most fun stores to shop. I rarely go in with a strict shopping list because that’s not really how TJ Maxx works. Instead, I keep an open mind and enjoy the treasure hunt. Some days I leave with a cute outfit for one of my girls; other days it’s a birthday gift, a new candle, or the perfect piece of home décor.
That said, one of the best ways to save money is simply not to shop if you don’t need anything. It’s easy to get caught up in all the amazing deals and walk out with things you never planned to buy. If you go in looking for “just a bargain,” you may end up spending more than you intended.
However, if you do need something specific, TJ Maxx is one of the first places I’d recommend. The prices are usually hard to beat, and there’s always a chance you’ll stumble upon an unexpected treasure. That’s what keeps me coming back: you never know what you’ll find, and when you do, it feels like you’ve scored an incredible deal.
