Safety first! On Friday, November 6 and Friday, November 13, 2020 the Wichita Police Department Broadway Corridor Team and Bike Walk Wichita will distribute free bicycle lights.
Kansas law requires that anyone riding a bicycle at night must have at least a front light and a rear reflector. Bike Walk Wichita has received a generous grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation to distribute lights and reflectors to bicyclists who do not have them. Bike Walk Wichita is using the grant funds to purchase lights and reflectors that it regularly distributes to
cyclists through its various programs. The upcoming distribution is just one of the ways that the lights are being distributed.
When and where can you get the free bicycle lights?
The bicycle lights will be handed out at different locations on each day:
- Friday, November 6, the free bicycle lights will be distributed at Orme and South Broadway (one block south of Kellogg) from 7-8 p.m.
- Friday, November 13, they’ll distribute the free lights at Walgreens Community Pharmacy, 803 N. Broadway (Murdock & Broadway) from 7-8 p.m.
If anyone needs a light and is not able to be at the distribution event on November 6 or 13, they can also receive a light by coming to Bike Walk Wichita’s ReCycle program, which is open Thursday 6-8pm and Friday and Saturday 1-4 p.m.
Now is a great time to get lights on your bike if you plan on riding it after dark. Daylight Savings Time ended on Sunday, November 1, so it now gets dark earlier.
Lights will be given out on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last.
