McPherson will be celebrating its fall Festival of Cultures September 23-25, 2016. For 20 years, it was known as the McPherson Scottish Festival. In 2016, the name of this fall hometown event was changed and the festival was expanded to include all nationalities, celebrating this Kansas community’s diverse ethnic heritage. The festival is open to both local residents and visitors.
The Festival of Cultures begins Friday night at 7 p.m. with a fire ceremony in the bandshell at McPherson Lakeside Park, followed by the opening of the beer garden and clan dinner at 8 p.m., and a Wish Lantern Ceremony at 9 p.m.
Saturday’s activities kick off with an early morning 5K fun run/walk. At 9 a.m., the Highland Athletic Competition begins in the north field. Entertainment continues throughout the day with Smithfield Fair and other live music groups, a Highland Dance Competition, fencing demonstrations, and more until 4 p.m. Sunday brings another day of cultural fun with more highland games, additional dancing and music performances, a community drum circle just after noon, and an ultimate Frisbee game in the afternoon.
The food court, children’s activities, falcons, clydesdales, paddle boats/kayaks, and police dunk tank will be available all day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets are only $8 per day for ages 13 and up. Get tickets and learn more about the McPherson Scottish/Festival of Cultures at the event website here.
