May is National Bike Month and apparently it has been since 1956, according to Kansas Cyclist. More specifically, May 17-22, 2010 is Bike to Work Week., and Friday, May 21st is Bike to Work Day.
Various organizations and businesses in Wichita will be sponsoring special free activities around town for cyclists. (You need to actually be riding your bike to participate in these activities.)
Tuesday, May 18th, 5:30 p.m. Find safe bicycle commuter routes in Wichita with a free guided tour of commuter rides.
Friday, May 21st, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Meet with other riders at Old Town square in front of the Warren Theater the 2nd street side, bring your lunch or pick something up from one of the nearby restaurants. According to the organizers of Bike Wichita, free bike inspections will be available from local bicycle shops including Lee’s Bike Shop and Bicycle Pedaler, and the first 50 cyclists to ride to Oldtown Square will receive a free burrito from Chipotle.
Saturday, May 22nd
Join in on the special activities and bike tours during I Bike Douglas. While you’re in the neighborhood, pedal to the Old Town Farmer’s Market where they will be distributing bicycle safety gear and other items courtesy of The Sedgwick County Health and Wellness Coalition.
