Put on your aviator glasses because it’s almost National Aviation Day on August 19th! Let’s all celebrate the amazing contributions that aviation has made to our city. Honoring the advancements in aviation that have revolutionized the way we travel worldwide. Living in Wichita, aviation is something to be extra proud of – let’s pay tribute to the pilots, engineers, and aviation technicians who make flight happen every day!
Let’s take this day to celebrate the great strides we’ve made in aviation over the years and recognize the fantastic aerospace industry we have right in our backyard. Here’s to our continued progress and innovation! Blow is some ideas on how to celebrate.
How to Celebrate National Aviation Day:
- Visit Exploration Palace
- Soar into this award-winning exhibit that reveals what happens behind the scenes in Wichita’s aircraft plants. Design an airplane seat—test landing gear. Rivet a wing. Pretend to be a superstar in a luxury jet. Explore up-close for a behind-the-scenes, hands-on look at how airplanes are designed, built and flown.

- Grab a bite to eat at Stearman Field Bar and Grill
- Easygoing, airplane-decorated bar & American eatery with an oversized patio overlooking the landing strip. If you get lucky, you can see plains fly in and out while sitting at the restaurant.

- Visit the Kansas Aviation Museum
- It is a museum all about aviation, and the building was the former Wichita Municipal Airport. The Museum has many aircraft displays, a kid’s play area, and more.

- Check out Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, but you can’t pass security without a ticket.
- Pack a picnic and camp out next to the airfor for a afternoon of plane spotting at our airport.

- The B-29 Doc Hangar, Education and Visitors Center provides a unique and one-of-a-kind look into aviation history. Located in Wichita, Kan., at Eisenhower National Airport, the 42,000 sq. ft. facility is an interactive experience for all ages.
- B-29 Doc serves as the backdrop for the public to enjoy bits of history, science, technology, engineering and mathematics that go hand-in-hand with aviation. As a real-life maintenance center, B-29 Doc volunteers will be actively working to maintain the historic warbird while visitors watch, ask questions and learn about the marvels of B-29 Doc.
