Moon landing anniversary events at Lake Afton Public Observatory

The volunteers at Lake Afton Public Observatory invite you to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing with special activities and presentations every Friday and Saturday in the month of July.

These are family-friendly and budget-friendly events. Admission to the observatory is $8 for adults, $4 for youth, or $20 for the family.

Below you’ll find a description of the activities happening each week:

7/5 Moon Mythbusters: Debunk common Moon myths and piece together some new facts! This family-friendly activity is included with admission. It is suitable for ages 6+. Guardians must be present.

7/6 Mirror Moon: Learn about the source of the Moon’s light. This family-friendly activity is included with admission. It is suitable for ages 6+. Guardians must be present.

7/12 Moon Phases: Learn why we see the Moon go through phases. This family-friendly activity is included with admission. It is suitable for ages 8+. Guardians must be present.

7/13 Apollo Mission Overviews: Why was Apollo 11 the first to land on the Moon? Why didn’t Apollo 13 land on the Moon? This presentation is included with admission. Find out something new about each of the Apollo Missions. This presentation is included with admission. It is suitable for ages 12+.

7/19 Did We Really Go to the Moon?: Find out how we know we really went to the Moon. This presentation is included with admission. Suitable for audiences ages 10+.

7/20 Observing the Moon: Learn tips and tricks for observing the Moon using a telescope, binoculars, or just your eyes! This presentation is included with admission. It is suitable for ages 10+.

7/26 What Lies Ahead?: After looking back and celebrating Apollo’s successes, find out what is planned for the future of human space flight. This presentation is included with admission. It is suitable for ages 10+.

7/27 Penny Moon and Earth’s Bright Neighbor: Discover why we only see one side of the Moon and compare the sizes of the Earth and Moon to the average distance that separates them. This family-friendly activity is included with admission. It is suitable for ages 8+. Guardians must be present.
