Did you know you could take sailing lessons right here in the Wichita area? I didn’t, until one reader who is on the board of a local sailing association emailed me last year and asked if I would share it with you. Now they’re back for summer of 2018 to let you know that you can learn to sail as nearby as Cheney Lake.

The Ninnescah Sailing Association offers sailing camps for youth and sailing classes for adults. (And they’ve been doing it for almost 40 years!) What’s more, the cost for these sailing lessons for either youth or grownups is affordable – nowhere near as expensive as I thought it might be. It’s even more affordable with the deal they’ve got going right now.
It’s a BOGO half-off promotion: If you enroll in the adult sailing class with a spouse, friend, or family member, you’ll get half off the second enrollment fee.
Here are the descriptions for the youth and the adult sailing camps this summer:
Youth Sailing Camps
Our Junior Sailing program is open to any young person, between the ages of 8 and 17, who has the desires to learn water safety, sailboat handling, sailboat racing, and sportsmanship. Adult Sailing Lessons at Cheney Lake
Have you always wanted to sail but never dreamed you could learn how in Kansas? For more than thirty-eight years, sailing classes have been taught at Cheney Reservoir, 30 miles west of Wichita, and the Ninnescah Sailing Association is offering learn-to-sail classes for non-members and members, ages 18 or older.
Basic Sailing classes start on Tuesday night with an introductory 3-hour classroom session followed by two full days of sailing instruction at Cheney Lake on Saturday and Sunday.
You will sail on Sunfish sailboats, small sloops and catamarans. You will also participate in several brief sessions of on-shore demonstrations and skill training.
June Class 1: Basic Sailing June 20, 24, 25
July Class 2: Basic Sailing July 18, 22, 23
August Class 3: Basic Keelboat* August 12 *Class 1 or 2 or previous sailing experience is a prerequisite for this one-day advanced sailing class.
Students who complete the basic sailing class and join the NSA within one year of graduation will receive a significant discount on fees and annual dues for the first year of membership.
Enroll with a friend or family member and receive 1/2 price off the second person’s enrollment fee. The cost for one of the two Basic Sailing Classes is $250; the cost for the one-day advanced sailing class is $125.
