2017 Children's Literacy Festival flyer

The 2017 Kansas Children’s Literacy Festival promises to be a fun and inspiring Wichita event! Area schools, local book stores, and community organizations have partnered to put on the festival, which will include fun activities to ignite excitement in students for reading and writing. It is FREE and open to the public!

There is a conference component to the event for area students and teachers, but on Saturday, October 28, the festival will be open to all, and it’s FREE!

Bike/Walk Wichita will bike in to the event and set up bike valet station and give away helmets. They’ll meet at Glendey Park so let them know if you want to join in on that! The community is invited to participate. You’ll arrive just before the start of the event.

The festival begins – as most awesome festivals do – with a parade at 11 a.m.! After the parade, city officials and event sponsors will greet everyone and kick off the festivities.

At noon, they have a Grandparents’ Brown Bag lunch. Grandparents (and the entire community) are invited to bring their lunches or grab a bite from the food trucks while enjoying wonderful stories from local storytellers.

From noon to 4 p.m., Reading Takes Flight with a free kite-flying and kite-decorating activity with my friends from Wings of the Wind.

The festival will also have a Children’s Village, Kansas authors’ tent, author talk and book signing, food trucks, a girls’ STEAM event, and more activities.

At 5 p.m., the Hoops 4 Literacy basketball game will be held inside the Boys & Girls Club. This will be a fun and engaging community event featuring teams of police officers and sheriffs along with their special celebrity friends. The first 300 children at the game will receive a free book.

The fun takes place on Opportunity Drive in Wichita, which is just west of Grove and north of 21st Street. The Children’s Literacy Festival is open to everyone.
