What better way to take advantage of one of Kansas’ natural resources than participating in the FREE kite festival in Derby on a nice May weekend?
The 2019 Derby Kite Festival will be held May 18 at High Park in Derby (2801 E. James St.). Since this is an outdoor event, be sure to visit the link below to see if there are any weather-related changes or cancellations.
The festival brings kite flying aficionados from across a multi-state region for a fantastic flying exhibition, and you can fly your kite right along with them! This year they’ll also have hot air balloons.
Admission to the Derby Kite Festival is free, and there will be plenty of FREE activities for kids, including an opportunity for kids to make their own paper kites that really fly.
The event will take place at High Park in Derby from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. All ages and skill levels are welcome, so don’t miss it!
You can bring your own kite, have the kids make one at the event, or buy an awesome new kite from my friends at Wings of the Wind. (See the kite in the picture? That’s the one we got at the first Derby Kite Festival, and it flies great!) They will be selling kites of all shapes and sizes for $5 and up.
You can also bring your lawn chairs, wagons, strollers, and even dogs on leashes. High Park has play areas for children, paths for walkers and bikers, a pond stocked with fish and plenty of open green space for free play or taking in nature.
Concessions will be available, so don’t forget to bring cash for delicious food or goodies.
We have a lot of good kite-flying wind here in Kansas. Let’s take advantage of it this weekend at the FREE Derby Kite Festival. (And do make sure to check out Wings of the Wind Kite-Mobile while you’re there. The owners are my friends and some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.)
Bring your whole family and enjoy the open fields and colorful sky filled with beautiful kites!
