The Wichita Fire Department offers a free course for Wichita residents to learn more about fire and emergency medical operations. The Citizens’ Fire Academy is a 10-week course offered free of charge for Wichita residents 18 and older. Participants must register, submit to a background check, and sign a waiver. Classes start April 25 and will be held at the Regional Training Center Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Citizens’ Fire Academy is not firefighter training or certification. According to the city, the academy “will enhance awareness of the department’s capabilities and limitations; develop realistic expectations of response times from point of dispatch; develop cooperative relationships between firefighters and the citizens of Wichita and encourage participations to become more aware of the dangers of fire and benefits of fire prevention.”
