The Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum and Watermark Books will hold a free author event and book-signing at the museum this Sunday, October 13, 2013.
At the event, meet Topeka historian and former U.S.A.F. Airman D.W. Carter. Carter’s book, Mayday Over Wichita, is about the worst non-natural disaster in the state’s history: The January 16, 1965 crash of a fully-loaded KC-135 tanker into a north Wichita neighborhood. The crash killed 23 people on the ground as well as the airplane’s seven crew members.
Carter first learned of the crash when he arrived at McConnell Air Force base as an airman in 2003. The book examines the events leading up to the crash and attempts to dispel commonly held misconceptions about its cause. According to Carter: “Our job as historians is to tell the story; an objective truth about what happened.”
Watermark Books will have copies of Mayday Over Wichita for sale at the event so you can have it signed by the author.
