We may not have beads and parades in Wichita to celebrate this fun day, but we do have food and entertainment!
Several Wichita businesses have come up with creative and delicious ways to celebrate Mardi Gras/ Fat Tuesday this year.
Why is it called Fat Tuesdays? The name comes from the tradition of indulging in rich, fatty foods on Ash Wednesday before the fasting season of Lent begins.
It’s Not Just One Day: While “Fat Tuesday” is the big day, Mardi Gras is actually a whole season, starting on January 6 (Epiphany) and ending the day before Lent.
The Colors Have Meaning: Purple stands for justice, green for faith, and gold for power — these official Mardi Gras colors date back to 1872.
King Cake Tradition: This sweet, cinnamon-filled pastry is a Mardi Gras staple. A tiny plastic baby is hidden inside, and whoever finds it is said to have good luck — and is usually expected to host the next party!
It Didn’t Start in New Orleans: The first American Mardi Gras took place in Mobile, Alabama, in 1703 although New Orleans made the celebration famous.
Masks Are a Must: By law, float riders in New Orleans must wear masks, keeping the spirit of mystery and fun alive.
