End-of-summer party at Mid-America All-Indian Center

The Mid-America All-Indian Center is throwing an end-of-summer party from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 at the Indian Center. It will include activities for adults and kids. Museum admission will be discounted for adults, and kids 12 and younger will get in free!

The party is being called Museum Flip Flop, and will include story-telling and a flashlight tour of the museum. Story time, normally reserved for nighttime under the stars, will take place inside the Gallery of Nations during the daytime. Then, they’ll flip off the lights inside the museum for a one-of-a-kind experience. Museum director Sarah Adams, with the help of flashlights, will lead patrons on an interactive and engaging tour of the museum.  “We think people will really enjoy this event because it gives them a chance to experience, and learn, in a completely different way,” said Adams. “The staff is looking forward to it as well because it is so fun and unique.”

Campfire Stories Under the Flags

This is a whole new take on American Indian storytelling, since it is traditionally done outdoors under the stars and nighttime sky. This time, the American Indian stories that have been passed down from generations will be told indoors by an American Indian Elder under the 73 flags of American Indian nations that hang inside the Indian Center’s Gallery of Nations.

Museum Tours in the Dark

Visitors have never seen the Indian Center Museum with the lights off. On Aug. 22, however, that will change as staff lead flashlight tours through the Museum, whose exhibits take on a different feel in the dark. Flashlights will be provided by the Indian Center.

Meet and greet and pictures with Kneehigh the Miniature Horse

Kneehigh is a 15-year-old, 33-inch-high American Miniature Horse who makes regular appearances around Wichita in his trademark “tennis shoes.” He may be half the size of the horses mentioned in American Indian history, but he has twice the personality.

Crafts and activities for kids and more surprises!
