Spice up your Saturday on September 24 with the annual Harvey County United Way Chili Cook-off in Newton. The annual community event features booths where businesses and community organizations serve up chili of all sorts in a block party atmosphere at Sixth and Main streets in Newton, KS. It’s inexpensive, too: admission is only $5 in advance or $6 at the gate and comes with a bowl that lets you sample as much chili as you can eat.
More than 1200 people attend the event each year. Competitors cook up their most delicious chili to help raise money for charity and to vie for one of two awards: The Pride of the Prairie, which is awarded by the judges, and The People’s Choice Award, which is determined by you. Plan to bring extra change so you can “vote” for your favorite chili. All proceeds benefit the United Way of Harvey County.
This will be a fun, family-friendly event with good food and live entertainment from various musicians, bands, and the Newton High School drum line. Gates are open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
New this year, they’re also holding the Red Hot Chili Pepper 5K and the Little Pepper fun run.
Get your advance tickets at Prairie Harvest, a United Way agency, the Newton Convention & Visitors Bureau, or Ameriprise Financial.
