The Oklahoma Leg Lamp is back—and now it’s a permanent attraction in Chickasha, Oklahoma! As big fans of A Christmas Story, we love seeing the iconic Fifty-Foot Leg Lamp lighting up the town each holiday season. If you haven’t visited yet, it’s the perfect time to check out this larger-than-life tribute!
What is the Leg Lamp? It’s from the movie A Christmas Story. It is a lamp that the father won in the film, and they called it the “Major Award”.
The sculpture, which stands 40 feet tall and is situated on a 10-foot base, is modeled after the infamous prop featured in A Christmas Story.

Leg Lamp Fun Facts:
- The story that inspired A Christmas Story, “Red Ryder Nails the Hammond Kid”, was published in the December 1965 issue of Playboy Magazine
- Jean Shepherd first got the idea for the leg lamp after seeing an advertisement featuring a pair of legs
- Two Leg Lamps were broken during filming
- The lampshade is a classic bell shape based on a lamp from the production designers mother’s living room
Where to see the Leg Lamp:
101 W. Chickasha Ave. Chickasha, OK
East edge of downtown, at the intersection of 1st St. and W. Chickasha Ave. One block south of US-62 and three blocks east of US-277.
Directions: The drive from Wichita, Kansas, to Chickasha, Oklahoma, is about 203 miles and takes roughly 3 hours and 15 minutes. You’ll head south from Wichita, following I-35 into Oklahoma before connecting to U.S. 81, which takes you straight into Chickasha. It’s an easy, mostly highway drive through small towns and open countryside—perfect for a short road trip with a couple of snack or rest stops along the way.
This Leg Lamp towers over Chickasha’s historic downtown. It’s open to the public and free to see, and it even lights up at night.
