The University of Chicago’s not-for-profit, independent research institution, NORC, is hiring 150 part-time telephone interviewers here in Wichita.
The NORC research call center in Wichita is located near the intersection of 21st Street and Amidon at 2021 North Amidon, Suite 1300. The Wichita location currently has 400 employees, and is looking to hire 150 more.
This could be a good second job. According to the press release, NORC’s flexible hours work well for students, retirees, teachers, and others.
NORC interviewers talk to people all over the United States from every conceivable walk of life to obtain information on issues such as health care, employment, education, and many others. In Wichita, NORC conducts vital work for a diverse array of research studies and clients, including The Associated Press as part of The AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The AP-NORC Center conducts research on such topical issues as partisanship and the media, Americans’ views on power and influence in Washington, and long-term care for the elderly. Wichita interviewers are also currently working on the National Immunization Survey, gathering information that will be used to estimate national immunization rates among young children.
To be an interviewer, English proficiency is required. Written and verbal Spanish proficiency is a plus.
NORC says it offers a collegial and professional work environment, flexible hours, and competitive pay with opportunities for advancement. In Wichita, the starting rates for interviewers are:
- English—$10 per hour
- Spanish bilingual—$10.50 per hour
- Opportunities for 50 cent pay increase or promotion within the first 9 months of hire through mid- and end-of-year reviews
- Paid training—no prior experience necessary

NORC has been in Wichita since the summer of 2016. Jenny Kelly, the Vice President of the company who oversees its Telephone Surveys and Support Operations, said they are looking to hire friendly people with good communications skills who can reach out to people around the country on important issues. “We are proud that we’ve had 34 internal promotions since we opened,” Kelly said.
