The Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum will host a special program on Halloween night, Thursday, October 31, 2013.
The program features a musical performance by Riders in the Sky, a group based in Nashville, Tennessee. During the show, Ranger Doug will play a song using the world’s oldest electric guitar, which debuted in Wichita on Halloween 81 years ago.
Riders in the Sky perform authentic renditions of old classic Cowboy and Western songs, as well as original works and various comedic skits and songs. The group has performed in over 6200 live performances, almost 300 national television appearances, over 200 public radio shows, 700 Grand Ole Opry appearances, three television series including a CBS Saturday morning show and numerous Christmas specials on TNN and CMT, an appearance on an episode of “Duck Dodgers” on Cartoon Network and more than 30 albums.
The World’s Oldest Electric Guitar will be back on exhibit at the Museum after being returned from exhibit at the Eiteljorg Museum. The guitar known widely as the Gage Brewer Guitar was made in Los Angeles by the company known today as “Rickenbacker”. Brewer is recognized as the first to debut the instrument and did so in Wichita through a series of Halloween concerts in 1932. The guitar is on loan to the Museum and its owners have approved Ranger Doug to play it in celebration of the instrument’s 81st year.
The program begins at 7 p.m. and is included with regular museum admission, which is $5 for adults, $2 for children 12 and under, and free for children under 6 years old. Admission is half-price if you come dressed like a cowboy!
An autograph session with Riders in the Sky will be held in the Museum Gift Shop, which is free and open to the public.
