Free historical program on How Kansas Women Gained the Vote

Sharing is caring!

The Wichita chapter of The League of Women Voters will host a free presentation and discussion titled “Women Rising: How Kansas Women Gained the Vote, 1859-1912″ at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum on Sunday, August 16, 2015. The event will include refreshments and a free tour of the Magic City exhibit.

The speaker will be Diane Eickhoff, an independent historian, writer, and editor of education materials. Her biography of Clarina Nichols, Revolutionary Heart: The Life of Clarina Nichols and the Pioneering Crusade for Women’s Rights, was named a Kansas Notable Book in 2007.

Kansas women gained the right to vote in 1912, eight years before Congress passed the 19th Amendment, which granted voting rights to all American women. To accomplish this feat, Kansas women had to overcome many obstacles, including the indifference of other women and the fear many had of being considered unladylike.

“Women Rising: How Kansas Women Gained the Vote, 1859-1912” is part of the Kansas Humanities Council’s Humanities Speakers Bureau, featuring presentations and discussions that examine our shared human experience – our innovations, culture, heritage, and conflicts.
