The Mid-America All-Indian Center opens it’s new exhibit, Gentle Harvest: Every Sheep Gets A Haircut, with special activities in the afternoon and half-price admission all day on Saturday, June 6, 2015.
Weaving is a long tradition in American Indian cultures. How are baskets and rugs woven? Where do they come from? This exhibit features two sections: “Getting to the Bottom of the Basket” and “The Flock Talks” and features many items from the Indian Center’s collections as well as hands-on material. Learn about how American Indians gently harvest plants and wool to create woven goods. Examine a dozen Navajo rugs and baskets from over ten different tribes. Pet a sheep and inspect a traditional vertical loom. See different types of weaving demonstrations, meet keepers from Sedgwick county zoo as they spin and talk about heritage breed sheep, and try your hand at weaving with your very own loom. You will get a sheep’s-eye view at this exhibit!
The museum will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with special half price admission ($3.50 adults; $2.50 seniors/students/military; under 13 is FREE).
The special activities will be available from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
