Wichita’s Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport will hold an open house of the new terminal this Saturday, April 18, 2015. The public is invited to attend from 1 to 5 p.m. and get a behind-the-scenes look at the new terminal and parking facilities.
Since the tour is being held prior to full completion, you’ll be allowed to view the entire facility without TSA restrictions. T-shirts will be given away and door prizes will be announced every half hour. I saw on the airport’s Facebook page that they’ll also be giving away Southwest Airlines tickets. You don’t have to be present to win.
Free parking will be available at the Learjet parking lot at 1 Learjet Way (entrance is located off of Tyler). Look for signs marked “Community Open House.” Transit buses will transport attendees to and from the new terminal. (See the map below.)
Security will be enforced. Please do not bring large bags, backpacks, coolers, weapons, or items that might be considered a security risk.
“The new terminal is a marvel of modern architecture right here in the Heartland,” said Victor White, Director of Airports. “It’s a point of pride for our city that should make travel to and from the Air Capital even better for outbound and inbound travelers.”
Designed to be a reflection of Wichita’s aviation prominence, the all-new Wichita Eisenhower National Airport terminal spans two levels, features 12 gates and encompasses 275,000 square feet. The terminal, parking garage and rental car facilities are designed to serve more than two million travelers every year with a world-class flight experience to and from the Air Capital. With five airlines making 72 flights daily, it’s not just Kansas’ largest airport – it’s the Midwest’s newest access point to the rest of the world.
Both facilities cost $200 million and were 100 percent financially self-supported through airport generated revenue and on-airport user fees and charges. No local tax dollars were used to fund the development or operation of the facilities.
