Wichita Spring Break 2013 (It’s Wichitawesome)

this-week-in-wichitaThis is your Wichita Spring Break on the Cheap guide to activities for families and kids. Spring Break is officially March 18-22, but since Wichita Public Schools are also out of school on the 14th and 15th, activities for those dates are included as well. Jimmy Kimmel doesn’t know what he’s missing!

Use the links or phone numbers provided to double-check all information.  These events are accurate at the time of this writing, but schedules do change sometimes.

Karg Art Glass – It’s free to go in and watch the glassblowers at work 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, but call to confirm. The gallery is open 8:30 a.m to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There are a variety of items in the gallery at a range of prices, so you might be able to score an affordable, one-of-a-kind piece. Thanks to Sherry for mentioning this on Facebook!

The Wichita WATER Center Museum is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Admission to the hands-on, interactive museum is free, and the WATER Center also regularly has activities for the kids. A nature trail follows a man-made creek to the Arkansas River. (Trail guide pamphlets are located at the trail head.) The WATER Center adjoins Hermann Hill Park, which has a disc golf course.

Sedgwick County Zoo Get the most from your membership (or the cost of admission) by timing your visit to take in a Keeper Talk or animal feeding time. Check the Daily Schedule at the Sedgwick County Zoo website to find out when you can watch the elephant training, the alligator feeding, or talk to the zookeepers about the new baby orangutan. Scroll down the Planning Your Visit page  to find out about the Giraffe Feeding Station, Boat Tour, the free Tram tours, stroller rental, and more. A zoo membership can save you a ton of money, since you get unlimited free visits throughout the year and 50% off at 140 reciprocating zoos and aquariums throughout the U.S. (including 6 other zoos here in Kansas), in Mexico, and in Canada. You can also save $2 on admission with the Wichita Go Card.

Great Plains Nature Center has a week of spring break activities planned. Visit at 10:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. every day. The Koch Habitat Hall will be open, which has hands-on, interactive displays and exhibits and a 2200-gallon aquarium. If the weather is beautiful, enjoy the Chisholm Trail Nature Center just outside the nature center. Admission to everything at the GPNC is free.

Get the (free!) Go Card if you plan to visit several Wichita attractions during Spring Break. Here’s how it works: Pay full admission at the first attraction and receive a Go Card for a $2 discount for each ticket you purchase at any of the 10 participating attractions within the next seven days.
