K-State Research and Extension in Sedgwick County will host a free Community Bloom and Grow Event Saturday, May 1, 2021 at the Sedgwick County Extension at Ridge Road and 21st Street.
The free drive-through event will begin at 3 p.m. Enter the parking lot from the 21st Street entrance.
The Sedgwick County Extension Master Gardeners will be handing out your choice of one of two themed gardening kits. You can choose from either a Vegetable Garden Kit or a Pollinator Garden Kit. Each kit contains free plant material and information on growing the plants, plus online resources and other fun giveaways.
The kits are available on a first-come, first-served basis until 6 p.m. or while they have kits to give out. There’s a limit of one kit per household. They have 500 of each kit to give away, while they last.
Both gardening kits will highlight parsley, the International Herb Association’s 2021 Herb of the Year. Parsley is not only an essential (and delicious) herb for the kitchen, but is also an essential plant for the pollinator community. It’s a primary food source for Eastern Black Swallowtail Butterfly larvae, along with dill, fennel, and other plants in the carrot family.
The free gardening kits offered on Saturday are for both first-time and experienced gardeners. Newcomers to gardening will find success because of the kits, and longtime gardeners will be able to expand their skills, producing fresh produce or support for pollinating insects throughout the Sedgwick County Community.
