The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a free community event to fight cancer. Fundraising before and during the event helps fuel the fight and the mission for the American Cancer Society. Local food trucks, live entertainment, family-oriented games and activities, auctions, and impactful ceremonies will keep things fun and lively!

A short history about Relay For Life to help readers to become a little bit more familiar:
Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, decided in 1985 to find out if his passion for running marathons could become a path to raise money for his local American Cancer Society office. He hoped people might pledge $25 to run or walk with him at University of Puget Sound. To inspire participation, Klatt himself would circle the school’s track for 24 hours. His idea worked, and he was able to raise $27,000 in a 24 hour period.
His innovative idea, now known as Relay For Life, has since grown into a global program with more than 5,000 events in communities as far as Soweto, South Africa, and Fukushima, Japan.
The Relay For Life program is more than just a fundraiser. It’s about communities coming together to support each other and the work the American Cancer Society is doing to fight cancer. Thanks to Dr. Klatt’s vision, Relay for Life has become the world’s largest program of its kind.
The Relay For Life of Sedgwick County is a 12-hour event that will be full of fun activities, games, live entertainment, food trucks, and even a free midnight Zumba class. To keep the fun going all night long, we will have life-sized board games, inflatables, and tons of other game-themed activities such as the murder-mystery game “Clue”. Even though there will be on-going activities throughout the night, attendees are free to walk around the track whenever they choose to do so. And attendees are free to come and go as they wish, and are welcome to bring family and friends as well. This is definitely a community focused event.
One of the highlights of the night is our Luminaria ceremony honoring those individuals that have been affected by cancer. We will also honor cancer survivors and caregivers with dinner on the evening of July 14th, 2017 just before the event begins, and breakfast on the morning of July 15th, 2017.
Moreover, on the night of the event there will also be fun opportunities for all interested attendees to provide charitable fundraising donations and possibly win a few prizes, such as through our auction items and other activities.
For anyone that is still interested in fundraising, or joining or starting a team, it is not too late. I would recommend visiting our local website or calling the local office for more information on how to get registered. All those interested can also get a jump on next year’s team fundraising as well.
This event is for anyone that is just looking for a good reason to get out of the house and have a free, fun, family-oriented night while giving back to a good cause. We recommend grabbing a comfortable pair of shoes and weather appropriate clothing, and just come on out. There will be plenty of opportunities to get involved for anyone looking to help with the night-of activities. And there will also be plenty of opportunity to simply view from the sidelines, and/or participant in the ongoing and intermittently timed fun games & activities throughout the night.
We hope to see you on this Friday, July 14th, 2017 @ 7:00 pm at Bishop Carroll High School.
Thanks,
Anthony & Shannel
