West Wichita now has a local bookstore that is a treat for the whole family. Owner Sara Ornelas has created a fun and creative space at Blue Baboon Books: Wichita’s Little Shop of Stories. They are located at 9428 W. Central, next to Veritá Coffee Bar & Roastery.
Blue Baboon carries children’s and young adult books. They also have a large variety of Melissa & Doug toys, journals and the ever popular Play Foam. If you haven’t tried Play Foam, I have to warn you that it is as much fun for adults as it is for kids. The best part is that it doesn’t stick to carpet or hair, which is a bonus in my house of 4 girls and 1 active boy!
Blue Baboon Books also offers free and cheap story times, crafting activities and special events for children and adults alike. Below is a list of the free weekly events available.
FREE Every Wednesday: Story Time
Every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., Miss Amy leads the children in a series of fun interactive rhymes and songs. Then she reads a couple of engaging stories and finishes the story time hour with more songs. If you haven’t been, you should take your little ones. They will love Miss Amy and her entertaining story time! And if you’re little one is a wiggler, don’t worry, wiggling is encouraged here!
FREE EVERY Friday: Once Upon a Science
Every Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Once Upon a Science will focus on a different science theme such as germs, colors and more. Children will explore both the creative and educational facets of the week’s topic with stories, games, songs, and discovery. Once Upon a Science events are free and appropriate for all ages.
