Veterans and active-duty members of the U.S. military are worthy of our respect and gratitude every day, but on Veterans Day we can do one better and take them out for a free meal, attend an event that honors them, visit one of the Wichita attractions that offer free admission on Veterans Day, or share this list of discounts to save them a few bucks.
Here is a list of Veterans Day freebies and deals available in the Wichita area, and more will be added through the week. (Please be prepared to show proof of service if requested.)
Although I’ve confirmed these deals nationally, participation may vary at each location. Call ahead if you have any doubt. And thank you for your service!
**Veterans Day Events in Wichita
Wichita Veterans Day Parade Saturday, November 8, 2013 at 11 a.m. followed by a memorabilia display, family activities and more in WaterWalk Plaza until 2 p.m. Starts at Central and Main and continues south past the WaterWalk complex.
Flag-Raising at Via Christi In recognition of Veterans Day, Via Christi Health will host two Veterans Day celebrations and flag raisings Tuesday, Nov. 11. The flag raisings will be at 9 a.m. at the front entrance of Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, 929 N. St. Francis, and at 10:30 a.m. at the Via Christi offices at West River Plaza, 2622 W. Central. There will be a brief ceremony at each location, which will include posting of the colors by the Kansas Air National Guard, followed by a reception.
Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum Veterans and their guests should take advantage of FREE admission at the museum Sunday afternoon, November 8, 2014. See the link for more details.
Exploration Place is free for everyone Sunday, November 9, from noon to 5 p.m. Veterans receive a 10% discount on the Explore Store, dome theater, mini-golf, and more.
Museum of World Treasures Active-duty military and veterans get free admission on Tuesday, November 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
**Veterans Day Restaurant Deals
Applebees Veterans and active duty military enjoy a free meal from a limited menu at Applebee’s during business hours on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11 at participating locations. Valid for dine-in only; beverage and gratuity not included. Proof of military service is required.
Carrabba’s Free appetizer (customer’s choice) for active and retired military members who show proof of service – either in uniform or a military ID. No purchase required. No printed coupon.
Chick-fil-A Both Wichita locations will be honoring military and veterans again with a FREE Chick-fil-A sandwich on Veterans Day. If you go during breakfast hours, you’ll get a FREE chicken biscuit. Just show proof of service.
Chuck E. Cheese The kid-friendly establishment is celebrating Veteran’s Day by offering all U.S. Armed Forces veterans and active-duty military 20 free tokens upon a visit to Chuck E. Cheese’s from Sunday, November 9, through Saturday, November 15. Military ID or proof of service is required, but no coupon is needed. The Veterans Day deal is available at each of the more than 500 participating Chuck E. Cheese’s stores. Please see store for specific restrictions.
Cracker Barrel Veterans will receive a complimentary Double Chocolate Fudge Coca-Cola® Cake dessert on November 11, 2014, and non-veterans can by purchasing the Double Chocolate Fudge Coca-Cola Cake on Nov. 11, or select retail items from the Red, White & Blue collection from Nov. 1-11. 10% of all proceeds will be donated to the USO. The retail items include God Bless America and Colossal Flag Tervis, Land of Free Word Block, Peg Game, Flag Cookie, All American Mix, and Camo and Pink Camo Jelly Bellies.
Denny’s Active, inactive, and retired military can dine in at Denny’s on Veterans Day from 5 a.m. until noon and have a free Build-Your-Own Grand Slam breakfast.
Freddy’s Frozen Custard Any veteran or active-duty military personnel who visits Freddy’s on Veterans Day will receive a gift certificate for a free menu item. The certificates will be good through the end of the month of November.
Golden Corral will once again offer a free dinner buffet and beverage to all U.S. veterans and active-duty military on Monday, November 17, 2014. (Note the date – this one is after Veterans Day.) Over the past 13 years, Golden Corral restaurants have served over 4 million free ‘thank you’ meals to our heroes in the military!
Granite City Food and Brewery Veterans receive a free lunch from a special menu and free Coca Cola beverage at all GCFB locations (excluding airports) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2014. Thanks Tanya!
Hooters On Tuesday, Nov. 11, Hooters invites all veterans and current servicemen and women to enjoy a free meal, up to $10.99 in value with any drink purchase, by presenting a military ID or proof of service at any Hooters location across the country.
IHOP At participating restaurants, veterans and active-duty military can receive a free order of Red, White, and Blue pancakes with proof of service on November 11, 2014. You should be extra careful to confirm participation with your nearest IHOP, however, since in the past some of our local IHOPs have NOT participated in various national promotions. Krispy Kreme Veterans and active-duty military can receive a free cup of coffee and a free doughnut at Krispy Kreme on November 11, beginning at 5 a.m. Proof of service is not required.
La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant This restaurant in Derby is offering a free meal for veterans. See the link for details.
La Mars Donuts Veterans and active military receive a free donut and 12 oz. coffee on November 11, 2014. Wichita has three La Mars locations (W. 21st, E. Harry, and N. Rock)
McAlisters Complimentary entree, drink, and dessert for veterans and active-duty military at either of the two Wichita locations.
Olive Garden On Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, Olive Garden restaurants will offer a free entrée from a special menu to active-duty military and military veterans with proof of military service. The special menu features seven of Olive Garden’s most popular items. The entrée is served with unlimited homemade soup or garden fresh salad and warm, garlic breadsticks.
On the Border is saying thank you with a free “Create Your Own Combo” menu for all veterans and active-duty military on Tuesday, November 11, 2014. The menu is an OTB bestseller with more than 150 possible dinner combinations. To receive the free meal, guests will need to provide proof of military service, which include U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card, U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card, Current Leave and Earnings Statement, Veterans Organization Card, DD214, Citation or Commendation.
Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt All retired and active-duty military personnel can receive a free cup of froyo, up to 11 ounces, on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11. To claim the offer, customers should provide proof of military service, such as a military ID card, uniform photo, honors, badges, or come dressed in their military uniform.
Outback Steakhouse Free Bloomin’ Onion and Beverage for military personnel in uniform or with military ID. Also, from November 12 – December 31, Outback’s Military Mates special is available: Military personnel in uniform or with military ID receive 15% off their bill.
Pie Five Every Pie Five Pizza restaurant across the country is inviting active-duty, reserve and retired service-members to enjoy a free pie on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Simply show a valid government/military ID and you’ll receive our sincere gratitude and your own perfect, customized pizza.
Red Robin Yum. Free Double Tavern Burger and Endless Steak Fries for veterans and military on Veterans Day.
Starbucks On Veterans Day, November 11, participating Starbucks locations in the U.S. will offer a free tall (12 fl. oz.) brewed coffee to veterans, active duty service members and military spouses. Use the Starbucks locator to call ahead and see if your nearest shop is participating.
For truck drivers: TA and Petro On the road for Veterans Day? On November 11, anyone who is a veteran of the armed forces and holds a CDL can receive a complimentary meal of their choice (up to a $15 value) at any of nearly 220 participating Iron Skillet®, Country Pride® and other full-service, home-style restaurants within TA and Petro Stopping Centers by simply showing proof of service to their server prior to ordering their meal. Proof of service includes: U.S. Uniform Services Retired ID Card; Veterans Organization Card; Photograph in uniform; DD214; or Citation or Commendation.

TGI Fridays at 2441 N. Maize Road in Wichita will offer veterans a free lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2014. Veterans can choose from a variety of menu items and appetizers. I verified this deal by calling our local Wichita TGI Fridays to see if it is participating in the national deal (it is), and got a good tip from Rick Perez: “Come early, because it gets busy early that day.”
Village Inn Veterans and military have a choice of three FREE breakfast entrees on November 11.

AARP For a limited time, veterans save 20% on membership dues.
Bed, Bath and Beyond Through November 11, 2014, all active duty, DOD, Reserves, Guard, retirees, veterans, and military spouses will receive 20% off their purchases in the store. U.S. Military ID is required to get the discount. See the link for details.
Cabela’s thanks Hometown Heroes with a special 10% off anything in the store (excluding firearms) and 5% off firearms for active military, veterans, law enforcement, firefighters, and EMS personnel through November 11, 2014. See the link for the full terms and conditions.
FREE Car Washes Green Lantern, Zips, and two Casey’s Express Wash locations in Wichita will once again give free car washes to veterans and active-duty military on November 11, 2014. No proof of service is needed – just let them know you are a veteran.
Great Clips On Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, customers who come in for a haircut at any U.S. Great Clips salon will receive a free haircut card to give to an active, inactive, or retired military member of any branch, including the National Guard. Military members can also come in on Veterans Day for a free haircut or to pick up a free haircut card to use, with proof of service, any day before Dec. 31, 2014.
Joanne’s Military service members, eligible family members, and veterans will receive 20% off total purchase Friday, November 7 through Tuesday, November 11, 2014. You must provide military or dependent ID or proof of service to get the discount. Some items are excluded. See link for complete details.
JCPenney All current and former military personnel and family members of active duty, reserves, guard, and retirees can use this coupon for an extra 20% off in JCPenney stores, Nov. 3-15, 2014 as a small thank you for your service.
Lowes All veterans who served honorably and who present a valid Form DD214 can receive a 10% discount on personal purchases at Lowes stores. There are some restrictions; for example, the discount is not available at Lowes.com, on previous purchases, on the purchase of gift cards, or on other promotions or discounts. National Parks Although 268 of our national parks never charge an entrance fee, the remaining 133 parks will have free admission on Veterans Day.
Sleep Number Save $400 to $700 on select Sleep Number beds. Wichita has two Sleep Number locations.
