Earlier this summer we set out to make a very simple-looking kite with instructions we found on the Internet — only to find that it wouldn’t fly. We still had fun spending time together as a family, watching our “simple” kite get more and more complicated as we added tails, supports, string, tape, and other fixes.

On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays throughout July, Wichita Michaels stores are offering free (or very inexpensive) crafts for kids ages 3 and up. The crafts take youngsters on a tour around the world as they make crafts representative of the various cultures and regions they visit. All of the craft activities are available from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
On Saturday mornings, keep the kids happy while you shop for fresh produce and Kansas-made goodies at the Old Town Farmer’s Market. The Kids Corner story time begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by free make-it/take-it crafts until noon.
This summer, reserve a few Sunday afternoons for Marilyn Monroe movies at the Wichita Orpheum. The Orpheum’s 2012 Summer Film Series is already underway with Marilyn movies showing as 2 p.m. Sunday matinees. Tickets are only $5, or $4 for students and military.
The Kansas Acoustic Arts Association and the Wichita Blues Society have teamed up this year to present free Summer Concerts in the Park. Every other Saturday in June and July, bring a lawn chair or blanket, maybe a picnic lunch, and enjoy free acoustic performances from some very talented Wichita musicians from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Riverside Park.
