Kids who are interested in a career in engineering are invited to this free Engineering Expo in Wichita.

Engineering Expo for Kids

The 14th annual free engineering expo, featuring hands-on activities for boys & girls, will be held on Saturday February 25, 2012, 9am-12pm at the Spirit AeroSystems HR Service Center located at 3420 S. Oliver (SE corner of 31st St. South & Oliver) from 9am-12pm. It is presented by the Wichita section of the Society of Women Engineers in partnership with the WSU College of Engineering to show kids how engineering and science relate to the world around us.

Expo features fun hands-on activities at various booths for kids in grades K-8. You can stop in any time and try something, and go to whatever booths you’re interested in. It runs for several hours but you can drop in any time.

There is no registration or cost involved. Expo is free for kids and parents!

Parents should stay with children throughout the activities.

FREE Little Explorers Preschool Playgroup at Exploration Place

Little Explorers at Exploration PlaceEach Tuesday Exploration Place offers free “Little Explorers” preschool playgroups. These weekly playgroups are free and no registration is required.

FREE: Family Fun Fair at Botanica Saturday

Botanica Family Fun FairEnjoy free admission, crafts for the kids, and exploring the gardens during the winter garden party at Botanica. The FREE Family Fun Fair will be this Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Kids can participate in hands-on activities and everyone can explore Wichita’s botanical garden. Admission and all activities are free.

Family Movie and Board Games Night at Exploration Place

Family Board Game Night Sedgwick County ExtensionThis month, the Sedgwick County Extension will hold Family Board Game Night at Exploration Place!

On Friday, February 3, you and your family can enjoy a night out together playing board games and watching a movie on the cheap. At 6:15, see Chirpie’s Amazing World Adventure in the Boeing Dome Theater for only $1 per person (including kids under 2). Afterward, from 7 – 9 p.m., enjoy playing board games together for free!

The Power of Words: Stories with Dylan Pritchett

Kansas African-American Museum Storytelling with Dylan PritchettStoryteller Dylan Pritchett will entertain and educate all ages on Friday evening, February 3 at The Kansas African-American Museum at 601 N. Water in Wichita. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the performance begins at 7 p.m.

Admission is free. This event is part of the Wichita Public Library’s African-American History Month Celebration.

Two other storytelling performances are scheduled in Wichita with Pritchett on Saturday, February 4:

  • 1:30 p.m. at the Angelou Northeast Branch Library, 3051 E. 21st, 688-9580
  • 3:30 p.m. at the Rockwell Branch Library, 5939 E. 9th, 688-9361

    Free Lowe’s Build And Grow Clinics for Kids

    Lowe's Build and Grow Clinics for January, 2012Lowe’s home improvement stores in Wichita offer free Build and Grow clinics on select Saturdays for kids in grades 1-5.

    Clinics begin at 10 a.m. To participate, register at the Lowes Build and Grow site. The first fifty kids registered and in attendance will receive a free project kit, work goggles, and apron. I have it on good authority that the projects are fun and educational.

    Upcoming workshops include:

    January 14, 2012: Build a castle. Kit comes with stickers, paperboard cutouts and a working drawbridge.

    January 28, 2012: Build-a-saurus. Build a cool dinosaur and then choose the stickers to make it a cartoon or a realistic dinosaur

    Free Amateur Radio Kids Day at Exploration Place

    Free Wichita Amateur Radio Club Kids Day at Exploration PlaceExploration Place will host the Wichita Amateur Radio Club on Sunday for the Amateur Radio Relay League’s Kids Day.

    The event will be held in the main lobby of Exploration Place from noon to 3 p.m. and admission is free. Kids will get to go “on air” and learn more about the hobby from veteran HAM radio operators.

    McCormick School Museum Open House

    The McCormick School building, designed by architects Proudfoot and Bird, is the oldest school building in Wichita. It’s now a museum that showcases the history of Wichita Public Schools.

    The museum is open to visitors on the second Sunday of each month from 2-5 p.m., September to June. Admission to the museum is free, although donations are accepted.

    Free Kids’ Workshop at Home Depot

    On the first Saturday of the month, Home Depot stores in Wichita offer free kids’ workshops for kids ages 5-12. Kids will get to build/assemble a new project each month. They’ll also take home a Home Depot workshop apron, a commemorative pin, and a certificate of achievement.

    The workshops are available between 9 a.m. and noon.

    Some of these make-and-take crafts are pretty cool. Past projects have included a painted wooden toolbox or valet organizer for dad (around Father’s Day), a rain gauge, coaster set, a school bus pencil holder, and even a helicopter!
