On the first Friday of every month the First Friday Music Crawl is in full swing from 6 p.m. until after 10 p.m. at venues in and around Old Town/Downtown Wichita. You’ll find a variety of genres performed live from month to month, including folk, pop, indi rock, jazz, reggae, punk, blues, bluegrass, keltic, showtunes–you name it.

Some of the venues do have age restrictions (18+ or 21+), and some do charge a cover. (These are indicated by *CC on the schedule at WichitaFirstFriday.com.)

This month, on Friday, October 6th, don’t miss the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum’s Exhibit Opening, “Wichita’s Smith Guitars – 18 Strings over Sedgwick County.” Learn about the developer of the 18-string guitar and enjoy live music from 6-9 p.m. Admission is free but donations to the museum are appreciated and accepted.

Here’s the event description:

First Friday Exhibit Opening – Sedgwick County, Kansas has a remarkable history of attracting maverick innovators. One name on this roster is Ralph Smith, developer of the 18 string guitar. Smith’s guitar designs were so pronounced and praised that he opened a guitar manufacturing facility in Haysville, Kansas. Financial troubles ended the company after one year, but Smith went on to build many guitars in a smaller facility staffed by his immediate family. Today, five years after Smith’s death, his family carries on the tradition established. Exhibit features some of Smith’s guitars, and is on view through the end of the year. Live music.

Date: Friday, October 7, 2011
Time: 6:00-10:00 pm
Location: Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum
Cost: free – donations accepted

Take a break from the heat by taking in a movie. Below is a round-up of the most budget-friendly movie prices in or near Wichita. This isn’t a comprehensive list of all movie theaters and ticket prices, of course, and there are other ways to save. In general, matinees (movies that start before 6 p.m.) have the lowest ticket prices. Don’t forget to take advantage of any military, senior citizen, or student discounts theaters may offer.

Have I missed any? Please share it in the comments section below!

Kids Summer Movie Specials

Dickinson Northrock 14 Summer Vacation Movie Series Season tickets are $13.00, which gets you in to all 8 shows. These movies are kid favorites, including Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Planet 51, Monsters vs. Aliens, and more. Tickets for single shows can also be purchased for $2.50 at the box office. Check with the box office to be sure, but it looks like showtimes will be at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The Summer Vacation Movie Series begins June 15, but season tickets are on sale now, according to the flyer.

Derby Plaza Theater summer movies for kids run from June 8 to August 12, 2010. Featuring kid-classics like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Charlotte’s Web, Alvin and the Chipmunks 2, and others (some of the same movies listed above), tickets are only $2. The movies begin at 10:30 a.m. (doors open at 10 a.m.) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The Kiddie Combo is a concessions special, which includes a small drink, popcorn, and small candy.

Student Specials

Many theaters offer student discounts. Be sure to check a theater’s website or ask at the box office before you pay full price.

Palace West movies are always $2.50, but students get a special deal on Friday and Saturday nights. Between 10 p.m. and midnight, show your student ID and get a ticket for $1.50.

Can you believe it? On Wednesdays, see new release for only $5. That special excludes seating in the Director’s Suite and 3D movies, but you can get 3D movie tickets there for only $8 on Wednesdays.

For tickets and showtimes, see MovieTickets.com (USA), the official online retailer for Warren Theaters.

There’s a free parking garage next to the theater, and plenty of shops to browse in the plaza. If you plan on ordering food from the theater grill, you’ll want to be there half an hour in advance. I hear they always have a jazz pre-show to enjoy.

During the summer, movies at the OldTown Warren start as early as 3 p.m.

Apparently, the $5 Wednesday tickets are even available for online purchase. (NOTE: Whenever I order online or through a computerized system, I always verify that I’m getting the price I expect BEFORE continuing the checkout process. This is just a good rule of thumb and something I recommend, because computers–like humans who blog about deals and discounts–aren’t perfect.)

MORE DISCOUNTS at the Warren Old Town Theater Grille:

  • The Warren OldTown Theater Grille also has discounts for college students and members of the military Sunday through Thursday. See the website for more details.
  • Discounts are, or soon will be, available on Mondays and Tuesdays members of the Boeing Employees Association, employees of Sedgwick County, Cargill, and Cessna. Check with your employer to find out how to take advantage of the discounts, which are good for up to a family of 4.

I was told by the General Manager that “the OldTown Warren Theater Grille is the only all-digital, full-service luxury theater in the country.” See? Who says you can’t be living large when you’re living on the cheap? Doesn’t Wichita rock?

I did ask about the policy on their website that says, “No Patrons under 17 allowed after 8:00pm.” It doesn’t mean you can’t bring your kids to a movie that ends after 8pm; it just means no one under 17 should be arriving after 8pm.

I would like one of these but it’s not on my “need” or even my “splurge” list just yet. (BTW, that’s an affiliate link. If you use it to buy something at Amazon, I might get a small commission. Which I might save up and use to buy a Kindle. Anyway…)

But there’s another way to get the instant gratification of downloading books, without the Kindle. The free Kindle Reading App is available for PC, Mac, IPhone, IPad, Android, Blackberry, and others. While it’s not the same as having a nice lightweight e-reader, it does open up access to the nearly 500,000+ books on Amazon, many of which are free.

With one of these, I could skip hardcover prices altogether and get the newest Lee Child novel on the day it’s released (today, as a matter of fact) for only $9.99. I can also subscribe to the Kindle version of many newspapers and magazines, or read the newsfeeds of my favorite blogs (like Wichita on the Cheap, for instance!) in Kindle format.

But mainly I will download it for the books. Especially the free ones.

It won’t replace real books — at least I don’t think so. Are you even able to read a Kindle in the tub? (I’m sure not taking my laptop in with me.) And what would I do without shelves full of my favorite books? Finishing a really great one and putting it on the shelf to keep, rather than to pass along, is a favorite ritual for more people than just me. But this thing of getting new books cheap? I can’t help being drawn to the idea. It’s like NOT having to wait for a movie to come out on DVD.

Now there’s an idea…
