barbecue grill bbqYou know it must be almost summer, because Wayman Oil in Mulvane has brought back this excellent money-saver: Fire up the grill with $6 propane refills, just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Bring your empty propane cylinders to Wayman Oil in Mulvane between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on May 22, 23, or 24 and get them refilled for just $6 each.

Every time I write about these cheap propane refills, someone will ask “Is this real???” I know it’s almost unbelievable, but yes – it really is real, and my family has saved a lot of money by taking advantage of it. If you have an empty 20lb. propane cylinder, bring it to Wayman Oil during the times and dates they’re doing the promotion and you’ll get your tank filled for $6.

The next most popular question: “Is there a limit?” No! According to the nice folks at Wayman Oil, there’s no limit. Bring your tanks and fill up on the cheap.

Wayman Oil will offer the $6 propane refills during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the following dates:

Memorial Day – May 22, 23 and 24; closed Saturday, May 25
Fourth of July – July 1, 2 and 3
Mulvane Old Settlers Parade – August 14, 15 and 16
Labor Day – August 28, 29 and 30wayman oil fb status

mycollegemoneyplanWichita State University has a newly revised online course that offers a step-by-step approach to choosing and paying for college or vocational/technical school.

The course, which is free, intends to teach personal financial management topics that will help students and families make wise decisions regarding choosing and paying for college, and to help students learn how to manage their finances while they’re in college.

Part 1 covers choosing and understanding the costs of college, how to pay for college without borrowing (yay), using and repaying loans, and building an overall financial plan for the college years. Part 2 covers topics related to financial independence, including banking, budgeting, credit, debt, and identity theft.

It looks like it could be a helpful resource, and I like that students are strongly encouraged to avoid debt to pay for college. However, the course does discuss some loan options (which I know for more and more families today is not being considered as an option), and the course provides a broad overview rather than specific advice. You may find it to be a helpful starting point in planning for college.

You can find and sign up for the course at MyCollegeMoneyPlan.org.

Kid's Closet Connection Consignment Sale in Wichita, Spring 2013It’s definitely time to clean out the closets (and the basement storage room, and the play room, and the garage…) and recoup some of the cost of feeding, clothing, entertaining, and transporting the kids. When the owners of the Kid’s Closet Connection Consignment Sale contacted me about advertising at Wichita on the Cheap, I decided I’m going to sign up to be a consignor. This will be my first sale.

The Kid’s Closet Connection Consignment Sale in Wichita is coming up March 8-10, 2013 at the Holiday Inn at Kellogg and Rock Road.

The consignment sale gives you the opportunity to sell all your lightly used kids items such as clothes, toys, car seats, strollers, etc. Just register to be a consignor, pre-price your items using the online tagging system, and drop your items off at the sale March 6th or 7th. Kid’s Closet Connection will do the rest – including, if you want, donating any unsold items to Youthville. (You’ll get a receipt.)

On  the sign up page, there is a place to enter where you heard about the sale. Select “Other” and write in “Wichita on the Cheap” to get 50% off the consignor fee.

The sale is being marketed to thousands of families to give you the best possible selling potential. No money is required to register; the consignor’s fee will be deducted from your proceeds at the end of the sale.
