Free Lunch Friday for National Bike to Work Day
Air up your tires and bike to work – and to a free lunch in downtown Wichita. Friday, May 18, 2012 is National Bike to Work Day. Celebrate with a free Jimmy John’s lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Old Town Plaza in Wichita. You can find more information about the lunch, Bike to Work Day, and Bike Month at the Health and Wellness Coalition of Wichita website.
Free Bike Tours in Downtown Wichita
I Bike Douglas is bringing back a popular event for Bike Month. On the afternoon of Saturday, May 19, 2012, all ages can participate in a free bike tour in downtown Wichita.
Bring your camera! You’ll choose between three different tours:
- The Architectural Ride will explore the city’s architectural heritage along Douglas Avenue.
- The Heroes Ride, in honor of Armed Services day, will visit memorials, sculptures and monuments dedicated to heroes, and includes a stop at Veterans Memorial Park on the Arkansas River.
- The Victorian Ride will begin at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum and will end with tours inside two Victorian homes, including a stately mansion.
Find out more at the I Bike Douglas Tours Facebook event page.
Walk at Work Day, May 16, 2012
I love this “advertisement” for Walk at Work Day from Sedgwick County, complete with “fine print” about the side effects:
This just in: exercise gives you energy! So, if you have that 2:30 feeling, don’t reach for a soda or energy drink. Instead, grab your walking shoes and get moving. You’ll get hours of energy now, and no crash later!
· Sugar and caffeine free!
· Burns calories with every dose!*
· Now available with endorphins!
· It’s free!*Results may vary and side effects may include loose-fitting clothing and a reduced risk of stroke, heart attack, diabetes and depression.
Wednesday, May 16, 2012 is Walk at Work Day. The idea is to find time during the work day, at lunch or while on breaks, to take a walk for exercise and to increase energy and get the other “side effects” walking can provide.
Last year, 96 worksites participated in Walk at Work Day. Participants can register and record their walks at www.sedgwickcounty.org between May 14 and 18. Each person who registers and records a walk will help the Sedgwick County Health Department measure total countywide participation and have his/her name entered in a drawing for prizes.
For more information, call Jalaa Miller with the Sedgwick County Health Department at 660-7387.
*For ideas on where to walk, check out this post about Wichita and Haysville Walking Trails.
KU Bicycle Safety Event Downtown
The KU Alumni Association will host “Wichita Hawks, Helmets & Handlebars,” a bicycle safety event for kids, at the WaterWalk in downtown Wichita. Kids who participate will receive a bicycle helmet and a signed certificate from Big Jay himself. A fire truck will also be on display from 9-10 a.m.
You’ll need to register for the Bicycle Safety Clinic, which will be held Saturday, May 12, 2012 from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $5 for children of KU Alumni members and $10 for children of non-members. For more information and to register, visit the Wichita Hawks, Helmets & Handlebars event page at the KU Alumni website.
Kansas Free Fishing Days and Cabela’s Fish for Millions
June 2nd and 3rd, 2012 are free fishing days in Kansas. Anyone can fish those days without a license!
If you catch the right fish, you could even win some money. That’s part of Cabela’s “Wanna Go Fishing for Million$?” promotion. They’ve tagged fish and sent them swimming in Kansas reservoirs.
If you’re signed up for the program and you catch one of the specially tagged fish, you can redeem at Cabela’s for prizes and cash. They say there’s even a $1 million fish out there somewhere.
These are the lakes stocked with prize-winning fish: Milford Reservoir, Glen Elder Reservoir, Cheney Reservoir, Cedar Bluff Reservoir, Hillsdale Reservoir, Clinton Reservoir, El Dorado Reservoir
