Photo of new paystation at Century II parking lot in downtown WichitaHeads up if you’re heading downtown to an event at Century II or to the Central branch of the Wichita Public Library. New “paystations” have been installed that will be used in lieu of the parking meters in a three-month test project by the City of Wichita.

This is according to a press release issued today by the City of Wichita. The paystations will accepted credit or debit cards in addition to coins. The cost for parking hasn’t changed, the city says. Daily parking between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. is still ten cents for a half-hour, 25¢ for two hours, and $1.25 for 10 hours.

The four new paystations are located near the north entrances to the Century II/Central Library lot. There will be signs posted nearby with instructions for using them, but this is the basic process:

1. Before you leave your parked car, make note of your space number.

2. Walk up to any one of the four pay stations.

3. Follow the instructions on the pay station screens: Select the amount of time you wish to pay for, follow the prompt to enter your space number and insert payment. (Only coins and credit cards are accepted; no dollar bills.)

4. Keep the printed receipt for your records. (You do not need to take it back to your car.)

The City of Wichita has contracted with its current parking management company, The Car Park, to oversee the temporary transition from meters to parking stations. The cost for the test project is $15,315. At the end of the three-month period, City officials will review the project to determine if it should be kept long term and expanded.

Kindles for kids

The National PTA has teamed up with Amazon for its new Family Reading Experience program, which is designed to promote parental involvement with their children’s reading.

Parental involvement and access to books has a greater impact on kids’ reading skills than household income, according to a recent report by Scholastic. National PTA will make the Family Reading Experience curriculum available for PTAs nationwide starting in March—National Reading Month. In certain low-income areas and at-risk schools, Amazon will donate Kindles for the PTA to distribute, and throughout 2013 the National PTA and Kindle will work together to encourage family involvement with their children’s reading.

Find the Top 100 paid and free ebooks for children at Amazon

Recently, Amazon added new parental controls to Kindles and a new app for Kindle Fire that offers kid-friendly content and allows parents to set screen time limits.

Kindle ereaders are priced as low as $69. (That version comes with “special offers” – aka advertising.) A basic Kindle without advertising is available for $89.

Readers can also download Kindle reading apps for tablets, smartphones, and other devices to access ebooks for children as well as other content. (Parental controls do not appear to be available in the current free Kindle reading apps.)

Because of the snow, this event has been rescheduled for Friday, March 1, 2013.

Exploration Place will hold another Bridging Art and Science Final Friday exhibit opening on March 1, 2013, in the bridge area just off the main lobby. Admission to this family art event is FREE. Light snacks will be available, and kids will make flip-books and pencil thaumatropes. (Scroll down for a video example.)

This month’s featured artists are Richard Crowson and Skyler Lovelace. Skyler uses gentle humor and an emphasis on color as ongoing themes in her work and digitally manipulate snapshots of family and friends to create heroic portraits. Richard is best known for his editorial cartoons, graphic satire and cartooning devices such as symbolism, exaggeration, analogy and caricature.

Date: Friday, March 1, 2013
Time: 5-7 p.m.
Location: Exploration Place Indoor Bridge, 300 N. McLean Blvd. Wichita, KS 67203
Cost: FREE

Val McCauley listed 10 Best Kitchen Gifts Under $25 recently over at Living on the Cheap. They are terrific gift ideas for any cook!

Val’s ideas inspired me to list a few of my own favorites. These basic kitchen tools help me prepare great meals quickly and inexpensively, and they are surprisingly affordable! As much as possible, I’ve included links to the exact items I use and love myself, or the nearest I could find.

Silicone Spatula Set of Four - Best Kitchen Gadgets under $10

  1. Silicone spatula with flat wooden handles – My favorite ones also happen to be the cheapest, because they just seem to be the easiest to handle and they are wonderful for scraping every last bit of cheese sauce, cookie dough, or whatever else you happen to be making out of the pan. I don’t know how I lived cooked without these. My first set came from Le-Walmart, but they don’t carry that exact set anymore. This set from Bed, Bath, and Beyond look the most similar, and guess what? Only $4.99 for the set of four!
  2. A good knife – It’s no Wusthof, but my Farberware santoku knife ($9.99 at Bed, Bath, and Beyond) cuts easily and sharpens well. Thanks to a gift from last Christmas, I also now have a set of Chicago Cutlery knives that cut nicely. If you’re still trying to dice tomatoes with a steak knife (or if you know someone who is), buy this. (Or buy the expensive Wusthoff and tell me what you think of it.)
  3. A knife sharpener – It’s on my to-do list to get my knives professionally sharpened, but good intentions don’t help me when I have a veggie tray to assemble. I’ve had this Rada Cutlery Quick Edge Knife Sharpener with Hardened Steel Wheels (approx. $8) for many years, and it’s great for a quick honing/sharpening. You set it on the counter and pull the blade back through the wheels. I’ve also used this AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener (approx. $9); one of the plus-sides of this one is that it’s better for sharpening scissors and other blades that would be awkward – or impossible – with the countertop sharpener. Oh – and it sharpens serrated edge knives.
  4. Instant read thermometer – Cooking temperatures are important for many reasons – cooking meat to proper temperatures keeps it safe for your family to eat, and some recipes call for very specific temperatures. I used to have a drawerful of different types of thermometers – frying and candy-making both require very high temperatures; yogurt and yeast both need temperatures in the lukewarm range – but now my Acurite instant read thermometer works for them all. Digital thermometers can also work, but go with waterproof if you get one. I ruined a brand new one when a tiny bit of water got in and fogged up the display (permanently).
  5. This Taylor Gourmet Stainless Steel Digital Thermometer with Probe is my latest kitchen love. You can walk away and let it beep at you when the turkey or roast is has reached the right internal temp. ($19.99 at Target) I got this from my son one year and loved it so much that I bought he and his new wife one as a housewarming present.
  6. A medium-size cutting board. Although I have a wonderful large butcherblock cutting board (that my husband made for me!) and it’s a pleasure to work on, I use the smaller poly cutting board almost daily. It’s just easier to wash, and fits better when the counter is covered with the ingredients for a meal. Mine looks almost exactly like this one at Amazon, and I would buy it again in a heartbeat.
  7. One thing I consider an essential is a good pressure cooker. But wow – the price of these has sure skyrocketed over the years. If you can find a Presto or another good brand at a garage sale, snap it up. The sealing ring, overpressure plug kit (which you will definitely want to replace before using a used pressure cooker) is about $10. The regulator – the little metal hat that sits on top of the cooker – starts at around $6. I can’t speak for the fancier, expensive brands, but I love the Presto pressure cooker I inherited from my parents. A similar but newer model can be had at Walmart for under $30.
  8. Nested stainless steel mixing bowls – or at least stainless bowls in two different sizes – are still essentials in my opinion. You can use one inside your pressure cooker to cook brown rice (in 10 minutes) or set it over a medium saucepan as a makeshift double-boiler. Most recipes for crusty bread call for placing a bowl of water in the oven along with the loaf, and your stainless steel mixing bowl will work perfectly for that. Again, mine came from my parents’ house, and new ones seem quite expensive. I suggest Goodwill, garage sales, or your own parents’ house. :) One other thing stainless bowls are good for: pouring off hot grease when you cook sausage or ground beef. A plastic bowl will melt.
  9. Heavy pots and pans. Unfortunately, most good cookware sets are expensive, and they are probably worth buying when the money is in the budget. But who says you really need a set? You’ll be pressed for space if you have a small kitchen, and you only have four burners anyway! I use a large, family-size skillet, a large-ish stockpot, and a medium size saucepan for most of my cooking. The saucepan and stockpot should be heavy and conduct heat well without scorching, but beyond that they really don’t need to be super-special. A good non-stick skillet will be worth a little more money, if you can afford it. A wok or wok-shaped pot is great if you want to make your own fried rice.
  10. Freezer-to-microwave storage containers are great to have for frugal cooking. Save leftover cooked chicken or pork for the aforementioned fried rice, or make extra servings of everything you cook, and store them in the freezer for future meals. I like the Rubbermaid containers with Easy-Find lids, and I’ve seen some good sales on them recently. A 40-piece set at Walmart is about $20 right now.

Having the right tools in the kitchen will help you make your own healthier, frugal meals faster than Rachel Ray can say EVOO, and is key to helping you avoid expensive prepared foods in the grocery store. Plus, it’s just kind of fun.

Dec 142012

It doesn’t take money to make the holidays special. It helps, but there are just some years when gifts aren’t in the budget. Other times, you just may be exhausted by the rush and pressure to buy things and decide to opt out. (I can relate totally.) While I love a deal, this website isn’t just about getting things. It’s about living well while living within your means. And sometimes that means having a no-money (or very little money) holiday.

This post was inspired by an email I received earlier today from a reader who doesn’t have the budget to do gifts. I have a long history of Christmases spent on the cheap, but nearly every year we’ve had fun despite the lack of big-ticket gifts. Here are some ideas for having fun this year, whether or not you have millions in the bank. Some of these suggestions are from readers, and I welcome YOUR comments on this post. Let’s help each other enjoy what we do have, whether that’s a lot or a little.

(Note: Attitude is everything, at least for me. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is “Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a stalled ox and hatred therewith. You can be the one with the love, if necessary.)

So here are the no-money/little-money ideas for enjoying the holidays:

Decorate on the cheap:

  • Jim suggests: Use your imagination when it comes to Christmas decorations.
  • Make salt dough ornaments.
  • Make your own easy holiday wreath. (Instructions are at the link. I haven’t tried this yet, but I love the idea.)
  • Use inexpensive ribbon as garland. Wrap it around the tree, a railing, or tie a bow in it and hang it on the wall.
  • Make a popcorn garland. We love this idea, but our puppy-dog will eat it. We know this from experience.
  • Take pictures off the wall and wrap them to look like gifts, then re-hang them. I had a friend who did this one year and it looked so great! If you’re not buying wrapping paper, wrap them in newspaper, plain white paper, or brown paper bags and use red ribbon to decorate.

Activities:

Food and snacks:

  • Can’t afford a whole ham, even with a coupon? Make a ham and scalloped potato casserole. When I was growing up, we thought this was for special occasions only. We didn’t know it was cheap!
  • Baked sweet potatoes are an easy, inexpensive, festive side. Lightly salt and pepper when they’re done, and set out butter and brown sugar for topping. (To cook, clean them well, pierce each one several times with a fork, and microwave on high, rotating once or twice, until the potatoes are tender. Microwaves vary so much, it’s hard to say how long it takes. Mine takes 7 to 10 minutes to cook several potatoes.)
  • Sumptuous does not have to be expensive. This dinner from AARP and Eating Well looks gorgeous and delicious, but they claim it’s less than $5 per serving.
  • Rice Krispy treats
  • Jello
  • Pie is not really expensive, especially if you make your own crust. This is my favorite crust recipe.

Gifts:

  • Give each member of the family a genuine compliment, both verbally and in writing.
  • Give something you already have that you know the recipient would like.
  • Give a plant you started yourself.
  • Do your brother’s chores.
  • Do your sister’s chores.
  • Give someone a free $10 Restaurant.com gift certificate, if they have email or Facebook.
  • Pool your limited resources and give someone else a gift. No matter how poor you are, someone’s poorer than you in some way. And I still think that giving money to someone you know or an organization you trust is a good thing to do, even if it’s just $5. If you choose your recipient well, you will never, ever regret it.
  • Homemade gourmet granola, caramel corn, or peanut brittle

What about you? Do you have some suggestions for enjoying the holidays affordably?
